The 1951 version is the original, and a classic. But for total shock value, nothing beats John Carpenter's version with Kurt Russell. That one gave me nightmares for a week it was so gruesome!
Trivia: James Arness was actually Peter Graves' (Mission:Impossible) brother. After Gunsmoke ended, Arness portrayed mountain man Zebulon Macahan in the series How the West Was Won.

After about 35 years they released The McCahans in the US 3 weeks ago. The first release has the movie and the first season. Good kick ass western, old Zeb don't take no guff from anyone.

On January 29, 1945, having undergone surgery several times, Arness was honorably discharged. His wounds continued to bother him, and in later years Arness suffered from chronic leg pain,[SUP][/SUP] which sometimes hurt when mounting a horse. His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart,[SUP][2][/SUP] the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three bronze battle stars, the World War II Victory Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge.[SUP][9]"[/SUP]

One film that Arness did with Spencer Tracy the same year "The Thing" was released was "The People Against O'Hara". Good movie.
