FS2004 Scenery--Loring Air Force Base, Maine (ME), USA. This expansive airfield was built to serve as a home to over 100 of the Air Force's then-new B-36 Peacemaker. Its strategic location made it a natural location for a SAC (Strategic Air Command) base and so it has served for over 40 years. However the B-36 itself was destined to be short-lived in Air Force service and Loring replaced its B-36s with new jet B-52 bombers in 1956. This scenery attempts to capture the base during its cold-war years of the 1970's. Scenery contains all-new custom objects for Loring Air Force Base as well as utilizing some common objects from the standard scenery libraries used by MAIW. Although there are no aircraft included with this package, the separate instruction sheet will guide users in easily obtaining quality AI aircraft that are appropriate to the period. By John Stinstrom.

Thanks Ian,
I posted a few pics of this scenery in the screenshot thread a couple days ago. Its a really nice package once you get the AI added to it. Now if only there was a AI B-36 (painted to fit the AB) to really go retro. I've been thinking of setting up a Silver Wings install just for the 50's and 60's, but that might be awhile as I'm working on my GW3 install setting it up for WW2 a/c and scenery.

There might not be any AI B-36 models available just yet, but there are certainly enough AI B-52s to bring Loring AFB back to life.

If you get the Team SDB Barksdale, you get a bonus of some AI B-47s.
They also do AI B-58s for Dyess.

Looking to populate this atmospheric - and historically significant - SAC base with suitably nostalgic AI (in FSX once I understand the conversion steps - being discussed over at the MAIW boards).

Question for experts: choosing AI is subjective but I would like to identify dates when there may have been a "sweet spot" such that there can be the largest variety of aircraft, e.g. perhaps the B-36's and 52's may have been present together on the base along with KC-97's for part of 1956? Does anyone know if this was the case? For obvious reasons, upgrades to new military planes usually happens all at once to avoid the expense of e.g. keeping different spares and also training skills, etc, so this kind of overlap is rare. Also, while in later years you can have the B-52s, KC-135s and F-106's together, does anyone know if there were fighters earlier than the Darts, e.g. maybe F-84's?

With all the military history resources available on line, I find it very difficult to find year by year inventory of a/c types on land bases.

For USN/USMC, there are good cv deployment records but not much info about when and where they were stationed ashore.

Dave, thanks!

Funny, when researching the other day the Wiki entry I found was not as detailed, in particular the "assignments" info.

So, you can have B-36's together with KC-97's and the first B-52's in 1956 OR you can have 52's with KC-135A's, F-102's and the last of the KC-97's in late 1957. Probably some visiting B-47s coming through from time to time during this period as well!

I'm inclined to suggest that you go with the B-52 era - as much as anything because you can't get an AI model of a B-36 (unless somebody knows better).
I'd be inclined to replace the F-106 with Phantoms, though. Move into the 1970s a touch.
