Lost a GMax Model

stuart277

SOH-CM-2025
Hi all
I have been working on a IJN Shimane Maru model, off and on over the last few weeks.
I have run into a problem where the model will not load (It is probably corrupted for one reason or another)
My GMax auto-saves are set to 9 and, unfortunately the last auto-save of the shimane Maru was well beyond that.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
I have attached the 'corrupt file' but I suspect that it is corrupt.View attachment IJN_ShimaneMaru.zip
Cheers

It's gone.

I found the best way to avoid the corrupted save error is to select all objects and make all of them Editable Mesh. Next go down to Remove Isolated Verteices and click on it. Now right click on the italic Editable Mesh text (italic text means that you have select more than on object) go to Collapse All.

Also checking the save before closing the current gMax is a good idea. I have found that the corrupted save is normally caused by a single part. If you can find that one bad part you should be able to use Remove Isolated Verteices and collapse the stack and it will now save just fine. I don't do this any more as I just select all objects and do Remove Isolated Verteices and collapse the stack at one time for all part.

Don't forget about any parts you have hidden. Using the Hide Selection option.

Hi Allen

Hi Allen
Thanks for your info.
My main mistake was working on other models and leaving this one past the '9' autosaves.
I was wondering ig GMax stores older autosaves in an archive somewhere or just sends them into the ether.
If there is a place, I cannot seem to find it.
No disaster, just start again from scratch (although I may have a back-up somewhere)
Cheers

look in your autoback folder. there could be one in there. it should ask you to save before it closes. atleast mine does.

I tend to make 4 models while I'm working on them. Just so I don't lose any progress. I've been doing that ever since I started gaming. I always have 4 save files. I just carried it over to modeling. It has worked for the most part.

on a side qestion: Do you have your small boats saved on a file anywhere. The liberty boats and rafts. I'm looking for a few to add to the Vietnam scenery. If you have a more detailed version of the 50' boats let me know.

You could try the autoback folder. Try any of the Autobak#.gx and MaxBack.bak. Rename the file extensions to .gmax and see if they will open.

It sounds like you already tried this and... well, crap :(. A hard lesson learned.

Remove Isolated Verteices and collapse the stack on all parts and the corrupted save error is just about gone. The only time I see the corrupted save error is when I forget to Remove Isolated Verteices and collapse the stack on every thing and this is why I always check the save before closing the current gMax.
