lost in RCBCO

new to naval aviation...so here I go:

I am a little hapless in the executing the finer points of readme's, and the package for RCBCO 2.0 sounds great. But the stepwise nature of the whole install and setup has been... a little elusive. ****, yes, UTFM, no.

I want to apply it to the latest Seafury and the Guy Hulin Corsair, particularly, flying from the Arromanches/Glory package.

Does anyone have links to example files for the panel coords for these planes? Are the tailhook coordinates correct? Any general remearks about using RCBCO for these planes?

I hope this is an appropriate request; if not, my apologies in advance.

What you should not do is give up.

Rob and Doug have kindly shared with all of us what I have found to be the very best all round a/c carrier cat and trap program.

It is not that complicated. They are such pro's that they have lots more info than most people doing freeware include. I think I have memorised their read me 'cause I go back to it so often to get the most nuances out of the set up.

I can probably send you my panel.cfg coordinates for the the Hulin F4U and the Sea Fury BUT this is the time - it's what got me much more up the curve and confident to edit e.g. panel configs - to experiment and trial and error adding the gauges. Doesn't matter where they pop in/appear the first time - as long as they show up - then you can move them around by guesstimating or, as others do, get the panel design payware thingy that cuts out all the cussing and swearing etc etc !!

Good luck!!

success!

A short report: installed the gauges successfully into the corsair and am now getting assertive wave-offs from the Arromanches.

Another couple of hundred approaches and I should be able to report a successful trap.

Dumb question, but I'll ask anyway,

Are you setting up headwind over the deck? I ususally set at least a "mild" strength wind for prop planes, "strong" winds for jets. That is to simulate the carrier's forward motion - that 16-20 kts makes a huge difference.

I find that apart from crappy visibility, planes like the Sea Fury and Corsair are fairly straight forward to land if you get the airspeed locked in, so I thought I'd throw out the suggestion in case you're struggling more than you should. All the same, carrier landings are tricky!

I know it's nowhere near as fun, but what I've done is set up trap zones to simulate FCLP (field carrier landing practice) at a favourite naval base (eg: for me, I set them up in CFB Shearwater, NAS Pensacola, and a few others).

I find practicing on land bases first, getting the exact touchdown point, speed, VS, etc. nailed makes the transition to carriers not only easier - but more realistic. It's an incentive to get it right, too. So for fun, I'll never take a new plane I've never flown aboard a carrier until I've trapped it 20 times at a land base - 5 of those at night.

To further engrain the pattern, power settings, etc. I set a goal to not consider myself "passed" until the last 3 out of the daytime traps are consecutively successful, and the last 2 night traps are consecutively successful. If find that getting successful traps consecutively helps me turn a mental confidence corner, and it starts to get more familiar.

I know that sound kind of geeky, but it usually only takes a couple of hours to get my "carrier type rating" on land, and the boat flying is just way easier after that. I really try to avoid crashes as if they were real - it just kills the whole experience for me - no pun intended ... :)

I'm glad you've got RCBCO going. The launch and trap sounds alone are worth piddling around with the gauges. Also, many of us have the gauges programmed in for many of the planes you may use - I'm willing to share the panel.cfg edits I made if you like.

Plane panels I programmed myself include the following:

Razbam McDonnell F2H-3 Banshee (using Alphasim Starfire panel)
Alphasim F4D Skyray
Alphasim F-8 Crusader
Alphasim F-4 Phantom
Alphasim F11F Tiger
AH Seafire

I may have a few more, but those are the ones that come to mind. If you want the panel.cfg entries, I'm happy to share - let me know.

cheers,

dl

hi DL,
thanks for the land & sea training regimen, hadnt set the carrier into the wind...great idea.
think I will start with L&S training and fool with the gauge locations in the sea fury and corsair along the way.

Wow, I see the potential for mo' piddlin'. Thanks Rob B....

Any way to change the HUD colors?

Naval Aviation is an excellent exercise in better piloting-- and hair-raising too.

No need for piddling on the Sea Fury (v2.6) - latest version on Flightsim.com has the gauges built in to the panel - ready to fly straight after downloading.

Never thought about the HUD - sorry, don't know.

cheers,

dl
