Machine gun range

Hi All

Just wondered what range the German Spandaus have. Just played a mission where I was forced down owing to my Pup being shot to pieces around me

On reviewing the mission, not something I've done often, I noticed on the frequent info screens that I was being hit from a distance of 1449ft

I always thought that shooting outside of 200yds was a waste of ammo (except for a lucky hit) yet this guy was shooting me to pieces!!

Any one else had this experience in P3? I know it happened a lot in P2 but thought it had been cured in P3

Cheers

Lucky hits can always happen (*). I was hit by some Camel rounds fro 600 ft - but flying the Albatros, I could carry on and down that sniper. Wish, I could shoot that good.

* unlucky hits too. During a scramble, I pulled up to get a Camel with a full burst. Unfortunately, a Dr.1 flew right through it. My rounds finished both of them off, and I almost flew off to another field, to join another Jasta - shame!

While the long range shooting by the AI is much improved over P2, I still find them able to ruin your day out to about 600 yards.

Truely they used to snipe at you from 1000yards it's a CFS3 thing, they think at times they've got .50 cal, or in this case 13.3mm

You should see yourself as Lucky, they used to hit you from 3000 feet:greenf:

AI are set to generally start firing from around 400 yards and depending on skill but will miss with many of their rounds (by the time they are firing they are usually closing in on you anyway :)). Of course bullets can hit you from other directions and randomly too.
MvR had a whack on the head from quite some distance out he thought was safe.

Don't give away too much, Pol, it's good as it is.
I realised, that you sometimes get hit by shots, that weren't meant for you.

On a scramble, I had a fight with a Camel, that tried to escape with a steep climb. But I had just gained energy, and pulled right after her. In the very moment I gave her the full burst, a Dr.1 flew right through it. I hoped, it wouldn't be too damaged. But they both came down; the Camel right away, and, as I was finished and went down for landing, I saw a Dr.1 crashing right into the field. A blue line appeared, saying: You just shot down a Fokker Dr.1 (or similar). Oooops! All blushed deep red, I made the landing, and din't dare to go to the canteen (Lol!)

I think, if he had flown an Albatros, it should have lasted longer.

Yeah best to keep your head low ;)
Bad things happen in a swirling fight of course, even taking off sometimes lol.
Plus sometimes if you have plenty of ammo a tactic is to fire at range to force someone to dodge and slow down. Some rounds will probably hit even by luck, just very wasteful.

I have noticed the same "distance firing" with reasonable hits. I'm curious as to why the OFF Team chose a distance of 400 yards to start firing for the "comparatively accurate" AI when all other tactics we've read suggest that no further than 50-100 yards was an absolute "waste of ammo" and generally inconsistent with instructed tactics (e.g. Boelke's Dicta). Interestingly, does the Team have the ability to edit this distance effectively (closer) without compromising the simulation (e.g. maybe the AI can't fly that close effectively)? From an immersion standpoint, regularly getting peppered at a 1/4-mile distance doesn't ring true to me.

Well to help your curiosity, given these are not real pilots but in a computer, in the many hours of testing that was found to be a good place for the AI to be "actively looking to shoot" to cope with the many 100s of combinations of dogfight situations.

You could be heading towards each other at 200 MPH for example. I know I would not wait for 50 yards to start pulling the trigger then and don't. Also as I explained above. 50 yards only means MvR wouldn't get hit in the head..

If you yourself fire from 400 yards, yep it will waste a lot of ammo, but you will hit with some. Just an incredible waste, when you still have to get home safely.
