Making r8 textures invisible

Ive got some scenery i like, its quite old, but the only thing that spoils it are the static aircraft, fs98 coversions with r8 textures. ive managed to lose some of the objects in the scenery i dont like by giving them an alpha, is there a similer way to make the r8 textures invisible,
just wondering, cheers ian

r8's have no alpha, so no dice there. Although you can update old aircraft that use them to use bmp's instead, do this then an alpha might be possible. Ther was an app by someone to do this for planes, escapes me who, I used to do it by hand.

Another option would be to hex edit them out, tedious, 'needle-in-haystack' type code editing, usually with lots of trial and even more error. I did manage to do this with the Lago Hawaii (if you've seen the C-5's and F-15's you'll fully understand why.) but they were library objects and I hex edited out the calls for them in the main scenery. Older scenery is probably API, so not sure if possible that way.

The 3rd and possibly easiest option would be to ask one of our very talented resident scenery designers if they could do an updated version, lol.

PS. what scenery is it?

I hear what your saying but sometimes its nice for someone else to do the hard work :icon_lol:
The scenery is Nueburg in Germany, an F4 Phantom base, ive removed the verhicels, may try losing some trees, but there actually not that bad, but ive got some static F4's that are really bugging me, esp as there's quite a few Ai F4's to use.
So im thinking difficult but not imposable, be nice to know what that app was called.
PS. this is for my own personnal use, wouldnt dream of altering someone else's scenery with out the original designers consent.
cheers ian

Hi,

You can create a DXT BMP file version of the R8 texture with the alpha channel (with the original file name with the normal R8 file extension). FS will load the texture, even though it is of the wrong "type". You will need to flip the texture (compared to the original R8), but I've forgotten the direction of the flip. If you are making it completely invisible, then it really won't matter. :icon_lol:

Hope this helps,
