The zip (actually a .rar) indeed doesn't open properly with all programs, ironically not even with WinRAR itself. However, at least 7-Zip and IZArc do the job.
Might be a case of backwards compatibility. It's not the first time that I see a .rar that won't open with a genuine (but old) WinRAR, I guess the .rar format isn't as strictly defined as .zip that works with practically everything since the MS-DOS days as the standards for it have remained the same for decades.
