Maunsell Forts - anybody thought of them?

With all the goings-on about scenery, someone should take a look at this little lot, all off the Thames Estuary. I can see the ACC people finding them very interesting...

There are a number of different types - the Army version is the one with multiple blocks, while the Navy type has the two pillars. They were used essentially for anti-aircraft guns, hence the interest for CFS3.

I had some given to me by...Ian Elliot was it?? and someone else may have finished them?? A long time ago but they're still around somewhere.
Has anyone checked the archive?

Yes i wondered about phillipm. I seem to remember some mission/facility set located off the Dutch coast, or a bit north? Mind you that was not British so not what ndicki is looking for. Texel is the name that springs to mind.

I've dug out what I have - see attached, there's a cfs3 model and facility.

It's a wip but if anyone wants to take it on I've included the gmax source. It needs guns adding.

The original was made by Ian Elliot (FS9 model) and I got it into Gmax converted it to cfs3.
(I'm fairly sure that someone has already done this though??)

I started one of these models years ago I think the problem was you can not add guns to buildings in CFS3.
If they are done as vehicles they have to move.

Hi Mark, There is a work-around for doing this sort of thing as a vehicle where you give them an extremely small max speed, it was done with the runway lights etc.

I did all the Texel stuff - murderous flak and the GC searchlights.

Do you NEED to add the flak positions to buildings? Maybe they could be in two separate entries for the same co-ordinates - the fort and the guns each as a separate facility file.

How did Firepower do the Flak Towers? (Was it even FP?)

No. The guns can be added seperately - but to give them a height position ie. to appear is if firing from the tower, they would need to be modelled as such. (I think). For the Mohne dam model I was working on I made guns that were 100' or so off the ground so in the facility would look like they were on the dam walls.

They must 've been really keen to put guns out in the water like that; although the need was desparate. Enemy fighters might 've got a shock thinking safe over water....

The Germans would come in along the Thames Estuary as this made for easy night navigating. They were out of reasonable range of AA defences until they were too close in to shoot down; a laden bomber crashing in a built-up area can do more damage than if it drops its bombs normally. The only safe way to engage them was further out, in the hope that they would crash into the river estuary, not onto the Docks or the City.
