MAW in Win7- 64

Hi Guys,
I have been flying m/s sims for many years now but have only recently joined this forum having spotted MAW as an add on to CFS3. I have a clean installation of CFS3 upgraded to 3.1a and I have been down loading Aussie files until I am dizzie. I installed originally to a drive which was not my main one and had moderate success getting at least to splash screens but nothing worked. I un-installed everything, reinstalled and my original CFS3 still works as beautifully as it always did. I have installed MAW via the latest files I could find on SOH - June 2010, and although it installs, nothing but nothing works. When I click on MAW standard mode, nothing happens. I have short cuts all over my desk top. Having read about how great MAW is I would love to be able to access it but what am I doing wrong? Do I need to run it within an XP emulation? More space - more files? and the original CFS3 doesn't need the emulation. My very first iteration of MAW at least gave me some sort of access - I got to the mission set up files which flickered and did nothing. The un-install, re-install have removed even this functionality. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Should I give up and try one of the other add ons?

Hello 6string, welcome to the forum! :wavey:

Uninstalls might not have been complete, especially if installing to a non-default folder or drive. To completely uninstall:-

  1. delete the MAW directory (which you'll have done, I expect)
  2. delete the MAW folder (CFS3 Mediterranean Air War) from Documents - get it from the Start menu
  3. delete the MAW AppData folder. Ordinarily you'll not find it unless you have made hidden files and folders visible, but type %appdata%\microsoft
in the address bar or Win 7's search box on the Start menu and you'll find it listed (CFS3 Mediterranean Air War) in the Explorer window.
  4. delete all the MAW icons on your desktop

Now you can start again. Do you have CFS3 installed to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Combat Flight Simulator 3 ? That's the default location for CFS3 in 64-bit Win 7 and it's where MAW will look for it.

The MAW installer is pretty smart, but be sure you're following the instructions fully. When it's done installing, run the MAW config utility before running MAW itself.

I use Win 7 64-bit and have MAW running quite happily on it. BTW, I have Win 7's UAC turned off.

Hi Hairy Spin,

Thanks for the help. I thought I had done all that but I might have missed something and so will do it again. My original CFS3 installation was on a none standard drive (I installed a new C drive and found it ran perfectly on the old one) and I wonder if there is a stub of that remaining causing confusion although the new CFS3 installation runs perfectly on the C drive. Do you have a recommendation from where to load the MAW files? Just in case I have some that are corrupted although they came from this site. I use AVG as a virus checker and that said it found a generic trojan when I ran the install. I suspect it removed it which might also be the problem if it was a false find. I ignored it the first time round.
Many thanks for taking the trouble to reply. I'll give this a go when we get back from a family celebration later today. Fingers crossed

... I use AVG as a virus checker and that said it found a generic trojan when I ran the install...

Yes, that may also be a problem: some AV software is a bit too sensitive for its own good. Check the logs for AVG to see what it may have removed and you may have to tell it to allow a file or two. If you're unsure about this, post details here and we'll give it the once-over. Good luck!

Hi Hairyspin,

It WORKS! I did a fresh download but the first install didn't change anything and half the files didn't seem to have been created - apps - docs - etc.. This was despite telling AVG to ignore the threat. But - of course - as with most anti virus programmes they think we shouldn't be let loose with our own computers and they know so much better than we do. More over, they don't tell us what they have done, and say the safe stuff has been installed and they have saved us from ourselves. Only they don't actually say that!! They just screw up the install. So - back to the beginning and uninstalling what was there. Then I disabled AVG, having turned off my internet connection and hey presto, it all ran the way you guys intended it to. I knew it was going to when the dos bat file for Make MAW directory ran which it hadn't before. It was that file AVG saw as a Trojan. Result - happiness and a whole new world to fly in. Really looking forward to new challenges and new missions.

Thanks for your help and encouragement. Much appreciated. I knew joining SOH was going to be a good thing.

Yes I am having great fun with it. Would I be right in thinking that MAW may not be quite as stable as the original CFS3? It has crashed on me a couple of times when I used warp (X) and once using the hat switch on the joy stick to change view. Other than that, no probs. - there is some stuff in here that is sooooo much better.
