Yep should be just one battery and it keeps the CMOS memory alive. Remove it and you should loose the clock timing. Most PC's will recognizes this as a problem and prompt you to set the clock when you boot up. I never saw one that would keep time when the battery was removed.

I forgot this go to a computer supply store and purchase a power supply tester. They can be picked up for $10 or less most times. Follow the instructions and test the power supply. Most likely not the problems but worth a shot.

Do as you already did but remove everything by that I mean all memory, PCI cards, Keyboard monitor and mouse. (leave the CPU in) then power up to see if you get error beep codes if you don't scrape it.

Sadly it sounds like time for a complete over haul or install used hardware unless you can find that motherboard new.

My advise is if you get a new pc put that hard drive in as a slave. It does not sound like you should have lost any data. It should still make good storage media.

That's kind of odd. I popped out the battery overnight. The computer was even unplugged! Perhaps it has a backup charge in a supercapacitor. About a 1 Farad capacitor would do the trick for a little while...

PS. It's a Compaq Presario. It's kind of bugging me now. I'll look on the internet and see if I can find out how it's keeping time just to satisfy my curiosity.
 
I was going to look for another battery or even a capacitor with a big charge rating, but I didn't feel like tearing the entire computer apart.:isadizzy:

~S~ All...I found a site specific to my Motherboard and its issues. This is apparently a common problem with this board (Thanks Gateway!) One gentlemen was able to track it to a bad solder of the onboard graphics chip and has been able to repair several with a bit of flex and a heat gun to reseat the solder...worth a try anyways.....I'll let you know the results...
 
~S~ Everyone.....At long last, I've got the machine rebuilt! It was indeed the MB. I replaced it without any leftover parts and all seems to be working again! Thanks to everyone for all of your assistance. As soon as I get caught up with my squadron, we'll return to our weekly missions. I look forward to seeing you folks back in the air.
