Back in the sixties, they had an air show at <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com

As a vice president of an aircraft radome company, I was invited. I landed at <st1

I said yes and got in. He introduced himself and gave me his card. It said Bud Mahurin, V.P. of Marketing<o

- Republic Aircraft. I said your name is familiar. “You the fighter ace?” and he said he was. During our 20 minute ride out to Dulles we became friends. He said that they were making a presentation to him of a rebuilt P- 47 in his markings.<o

He invited me to join him in the Republic Chateau which turned out to be two stretched trailers joined together. One part was for socializing and the other was for eating where they had a Chef with a carving station, there was lobster, crab, shrimp and also a open full bar.<o

Bud got me a Republic Aviation Badge which would let me in to all the chateaus and all the demonstrations. I told Bud that I wanted to look around and wandered around to the various demonstrations.<o

A British Vulcan flew in and made a bunch of low passes and then climbed up like a fighter. It was something to see and hear.<o

It happened to park right where I was standing. The crew came out, climbing down a ladder. We were talking and they said they were just getting there from <st1:City><st1
lace>Lincolnshire</st1
lace></st1:City>. They invited me to visit the cockpit. It was roomy but it became obvious that they hadn’t discovered deodorants in the U.K.
I saw a lot of interesting foreign aircraft and also the prototype of the C5- A. Finally, the sun got to me and I decided to join Bud in his chateau. While I was there I got to meet Chuck Yeager, Bud Anderson and Bob Hoover whose flight exhibition I had watched earlier. <o

I reluctantly had to leave and I would say that I had a full and memorable day.<o
