Mediterranean Blues

Ravenna

SOH-CM-2023
Having followed the admirably clear MTO installation instructions and taken a series of flights around the seaplane bases, I have come across a bit of a problem. Make that two problems:mixed-smiley-027:.

Places like Gibraltar and Morocco have fine coastlines with defined beaches and "surf". The cost along southern France and around Italy, however are angular/ blocky and have no beaches or water edging. I tried removing the watermask files from the world\scenery folder and making a separate watermask folder for the scenery library, just below Sander's eurw_LC_su_BETA4 folder. Now the coastlines look OK and align with ports and seaplane bases (well...except for local flooding around Alexandria!) but I still have no coastal fringing/ sand/ water's edge.
Any suggestions (including start over) most welcome.:wavey:

Ravenna,

If you're missing the French/Italian coasts and the port of Alexandria is flooded, that means that Sander's Eurw files and Jean Bomber's African coastlines are either missing or not layered correctly.

Also, you will notice even when things are installed correctly that there are some issues in Eastern Sicily around Messina and Syracuse; this is addressed in a .pdf included in some campaigns on how to deal with the issue.

The Eurw coastlines (and shorelines) come to a halt somewhere southeast of Trieste, Italy in the former Yugoslavia, beyond that it reverts to Rhumba's watermasks. The same is true once you get just past Alexandria, Egypt heading east.

Go back and take it step by step, and then if you still get stuck, let's talk. :biggrin-new:

Scenery Correction (the short version): Having assumed that the large Eurw zip contained all that was needed for the Eurw install, I originally used just that. This time I compared it with the contents of the 4 smaller Eurw zips and found that they contained a larger group of bgl files. Adding these has given me northern Mediterranean coastlines. I have checked the ordering of scenery entries in the sim and in the scenery.cfg. The scenery .cfg needed some housework (making entry and area numbers the same and putting spaces between areas). flying over a large sampling of Med coastlines and over all the islands with airbases, everything looks as it should be, but I am still getting a few GSL objects with "rising damp" (see pics). Most noticeable are the harborside at Tobruk and the area immediately to the south of the SP base at Alexandria. I have checked to make sure that Pen's Afnor lake fix is in the Afnor_scen scenery folder.

Am I seeing what I should be seeing, or am I still missing something?

Couldn't help but wish, while flying over Paestum that someone would make a couple of Greek temples in varying states of ruin!

Cheers,

Ravenna

Michael,

Yes. Jean Bomber's North African coastlines are missing or not activated. If I recall correctly, Sander's Eurw coastlines only cover parts of Algeria and Tunisia, and end just south of Cape Bon, heading south along the Tunisia coast.

Tobruk should look like this...

Here is the link for the North African coastlines: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=49&id=2932

They should go in the Afnor_Scen folder. If you have everything else, just make sure your scenery order matches pages 35-39 in the MTO install guide and you're all set.

Thanks Andrew.
That link is for your MTO install guide. I tracked back through my files and found the bgls for the North African coast (Desert Scen beta). Later today I will have another look at that coastline.
Greatly appreciate your help.

Michael,

My pleasure. Your experience is precisely why I started including the relevant scenery packages in the auto-installers for the Mediterranean.
