mesh and airports

The new mesh from FSGenesis is great but it seems to cause problems with some airports now being in a canyon. So I'm trying to find out an EASY way to fix this. Looked at afcad and that doesn't do it but mentions flattening switches. Anyway I'm a total noob at this and know nothing about it, can't find anything about it and would appreciate if someone could give me some info.

The easy answer , Rich, is that there is no easy answer. I am currently working with a program called FST flatten.....it supposedly allows you to slew around an area and generates a bgl that will flatten a given area. Unfortunately, I have been unable to generate a satisfactory result with the program as of yet. But I will keep trying....

I'm surprised it's so difficult. Scenery designers make flattens all the time. Sometimes it's a file and sometimes a line to add to the cfg file. Seems like it would be a routine procedure.

Hi,

Please check here (and it's not a easy mod in a cfg or a file)

Thanks for the links. I'm going to give it a try. There aren't a lot of airports that need this, fortunately, but some are ones I'd like to fly to frequently.

FST Flatten works just fine, it's not difficult to use. The problem we all have including mesh designers is how to make a slope connecting the flattened airport to the surrounding landscape. What we get now are cliffs connecting the two. So far as I know only Microsoft has managed the slopes.

Rich the world of FS9 and FSX for that matter are incorrect in a lot of ways. It is the way the sim was made. Therefore any attempt to make it more "real" can and will result in those kinds of oddities.

Many airports are technically not at the correct altitude so when you place a good mesh in the sim those airports that fit the poorly modeled mesh no longer fit a proper mesh. Luckily some of it does fit so the good mesh is still desirable just will have some flaws that will need to be address by you if they bother you.

I ran into a good example of this about a year ago. I purchased USA Waters by R. Tarburet.

USA waters is a detailed update for Rivers - Coastlines - Streams - Lakes for the United States Territories. Covers the whole of the States - other than Puerto Rico. Waters bodies are positioned and designed accordingly to high resolution digital data - to reflect realistic position - shapes and dimensions for the whole of the United States. Offer full compatibility with any Terrain usgs / srtm designed terrain mesh - Manhattan Scenery - Lennart Textures - USA Roads scenery.
It really is a fine package and it does just as it says but here is the problem. A lot of the airports in FS are not really in the correct place. So you end up with a lot of runways sitting on the water in remote places like Alaska. KPBI was over run by auto gen because a water poly was too close the the airport scenery so it created a conflict that made KPBI unusable.

So it becomes a question of which unrealness are you willing to live with. Of course its you sim and you can chose to correct it yourself but that will start another whole thread. :jump:

Seem's your problem there had nothing to do with the OP meshs or elevations problems .. but instead it's a landclass problem .... AFAIK

Well yes that would be it. The add on placed water in the proper location (real world) which just happened to be where Microsoft placed a default airport which should have been somewhere else down the road.

Kind of like the screen shots Trans_23 posted :icon_lol:
