Mesh...which way is up?

OBIO

Okay, I need some clarification on mesh/scenery order. Currently, I have my mesh set up like this...top to bottom:

FSGenesis
Rhumbaflappy
Stock

I was just back in Yellowstone National Park, after confirming that I have the FSGenesis mesh installed...and it still looks nothing like the screenshot Aadvark posted (in the FS Makes You Go Wow thread) of the exact same area. Granted he has Ultimate Terrain and GEPro on top of the FSGenesis mesh...but those don't change the shape of the land...or at least not to my knowledge.

So, what is the proper way to layer mesh/scenery so that the highest level mesh is used? Does the higher level mesh go above the lower level mesh, like I have it set up, or does higher level mesh go under lower level mesh?

Hi Obio. The way I understand it is that the sim should (!) automatically load the highest res mesh over any others. However, if you have two mesh sceneries for the same installed area that are the same LOD resolution, contrary to the usual order of things, the sim will load the one that is lower in the library listing. So to be on the safe side, order your mesh (whatever the resolution) so that the one you most want to see has lowest priority in the scenery library.
Try this and see if it makes a difference to what you are seeing.

I rearranged my mesh to:

Rhumbaflappy
FSGenesis
Stock

And it still looks the same. I need to take a really detailed look at the various scenery packs I have installed and see if one of them has a mesh for that area.

With several payware addons ( Van+ ; Misty & Tongas Fjords etc) there is a need to alter the TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL in the FS9 cfg.

Here's a link to a previous post about mesh ......

New FS Genesis meshes!

For those using the 19m mesh, don't forget to edit your FS9 config, otherwise the default still displays 76.4m resolution. Sometimes the placebo effect takes over and you might think the terrain is in high res...

Default FS9 (76.4m)
TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=19

(38.2m)
TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=20

(19.1m)
TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21 (USE THIS SETTING otherwise the new mesh will not show up)

(9.6m, if you have the hawaii mesh, swiss alps, etc. installed, and also patched to 9.1)
TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=22

keep in mind that the higher the number, the higher the terrain resolution, and thus more polygons/memory usage. LEVEL=21 and 22 are not recommended for slower PCs...

I hope this helps,

Pete.

I renamed my scenery.cfg file, brought in a factory fresh scenery.cfg, and have added the FSGenesis mesh...other than some scenery in the Add On folder, FSGenesis is the only add on....the only mesh. Still looks the same. I think the visual enhancement of Ultimate Terrain and GEPro makes the area look different than the ground textures I am using...and those differences makes Aardvark's Yellowstone look much better. I think I will sell one or both of the dogs and buy Ultimate Terrain.

I have the Terrain_Max_Vetex_Level set to 21.

Obio - just try one more thing; the flight time in my screen was set to spring (I think) and dawn + 2 hours. This really did help enhance the terrain contours. Give that a go and see if that makes things look any closer to mine.

ps. "I think the visual enhancement of Ultimate Terrain and GEPro makes the area look different than the ground textures I am using...and those differences makes Aardvark's Yellowstone look much better. I think I will sell one or both of the dogs and buy Ultimate Terrain."

As the textures are provided by GEPro, you might have to consider selling the missus as well.

Agreed that time of day contributes to the overall look. That said, UT was one of the payware addons that I'm glad I got, as well as GE. I'm still learning with ENB but it has shown dividends already. But you had me worried for a moment there. If you're asking directions in FS, where does that leave amoebas like me?

I am not a FS guru. What I know about FS could fit on the head of a pin. Modifying MDL files I can do only thanks to the wonderful utilities/programs written by Martin Wright and Ivan Hsu. Skinning...that really isn't a hard thing to learn to do....but it takes a level of artistry to do well, which I don't have....what I do is middle of the road stuff. Panel tweaks, sound file tweaks...again, not things that others could not easily do with the right tools. Making my installs look great using freeware...all it takes is time digging through the various download libraries and finding great packages done by people with real talent.

When it comes to the inner nuts and bolts of FS....I am pretty much an idiot. I too am an amoeba.

Mesh bgl files can go into any active folder in FS. FS will use the highest res mesh available. I keep my mesh bgl's in a addon scenery folder just to be able to find them fast.

FS9.cfg in Windows 7

I guess this is as good a thread as any to ask a question. I'd like to edit my FS9.cfg file as described by Pete above.

When I had Vista, the address was:

C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9

I'm now using W7 on this computer and there does not seem to be such an address. I've got the "Display hidden files" turned on and I've run a search via the OS search engine for the file, but it remains stubbornly hidden. Can anyone post the corect address for it?

By the way Obio, I keep all my mesh in a seperate folder in the MS Games folder and direct both CFS 2 and FS 9 to it. Saves some space if you run multiple flight sims.

Thanks.
