Micro$oft's Latest Trick

Blackbird686

SOH-CM-2025
Seems that now... I can no longer select the updates I want for my system, and UN-select the ones I don't without having Windows 10 automatically downloaded and installed on my system. Even if I UN-check the update for Windows 10, with selected security updates checked, it begins the process of downloading the setup files for Windows 10 regardless. Hiding the Windows 10 update as well as the removed KB's associated with Windows 10 only results in their re-installation automatically. It even tells me in the frame that I selected security updates only, then when I hit "Install Updates"... Windows 10 starts downloading onto my machine... and the Windows 10 Update option is UNCHECKED! WTF???

It's not that I wouldn't use Windows 10, I just DON'T WANT IT ON THIS PARTICULAR PC!!!! and I DON'T LIKE THE IDEA OF MICROSOFT SHOVING IT DOWN MY THROAT.

Let ME decide what I want on MY personal machine! Don't know if any of the rest of you chaps have experienced this but I thought I'd warn you guys about it.

Blackbird 686 I had this problem did you delete this file located (C)/Windows/System32/GWX using Unlocker1.9.2.exe from filehippo otherwise you can't delete the file using windows7 64bit this finally stopped w10 upgrade from bugging me. Microsofts latest updates automatically updated my system yesterday and windows 10 was not one of them still with W7 64bit. This Gwx folder contains the gwx.exe.

I have the Unlocker from FileHippo, searched for "gwx.exe" in both the System 32 folder with the Unlocker program as well as looking at the System 32 folder manually. There is no "GWX.exe" in that location. I remember deleting that one using the Control Panel some time ago.

It was hidden on mine enable hidden folders and see if it shows up good luck it drove me nuts trying to get rid of it tried the removing kb files and hiding them on Microsoft updates didn't work for me also on (c) was the folder for the install w10 around 4gb removed that also since removing these folders no more w10 nagging or trying to install it automatically. The file gwx also contained teledata and other settings for w10 update in it this worked for me.

How did you show hidden files and folders?

How did you show hidden files and folders?
Click windows icon left hand corner of screen/Control panel/Appearance and personalisation/show hidden files/check show hidden files box

On my Windows XP Pro system, it is: Tools -- Folder Options -- View -- Files and Folders, then Check the "View Hidden files and folders" box.

Good Luck. I haven't had an update in years and it still works great. Guess I'm not worth hacking.

I do have the Norton Symantec firewall running on this machine. Every once in a while I run the MalwareBytes anti malware program. I may consider just dumping the updates altogether if I cannot get rid of this little nuisance.

I cannot seem to get to any sort of access that will allow me to view hidden files and folders. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium on this particular machine...

Thanks for the info!

I would also check windows hasn't reinstalled the kb file you deleted but first alter Microsoft updates to only tell you whats available and not download and install. Go to windows update manually and check updates installed and that the kb file you deleted is not on the list if it is delete it through windows update, restart computer go back to windows update and let it find the update kb you just deleted, right click on it and hide update restart computer reinstate auto updates and now it shouldn't reinstall w10 update. I had to delete the gwx folder as well to get rid of the icon in the toolbar. This is what I did and it worked for me on Windows7 64bit.

I'm Running W7 Home premium 64
Left Click on Windows icon left bottom corner bottom task bar (start)
Left click control panel
Left click on Appearance and Personalisation
Folder options left click show hidden files and folders
left click on view tab check show hidden files and folders and drives
click ok
Hidden files should now be visible.

Cheers mate!

Now the search begins... I'll keep you all posted here.

EDIT: I found the hidden object GWX.exe and removed it with the Unlocker1.9.2.exe. Also checked the list of KB's to ensure all the ones related to the Windows 10 update were gone... No effect. I still have that bloody Windows 10 thing in my update list. The pesky little KB2952664 update once deleted... keeps coming back. even un-selecting the update for the Windows 10 install in the update list has no effect. M$ really wants their Windows 10 running on MY machine to the point that they have taken control of it away from me.

GWX Control Panel

Guys, I saw this new utility several weeks ago and found that it really, really does work! In mere seconds it has removed all of the Win10 nonsense from my sim machine. It will also re-enable Win10 if and when you decide to take the plunge!

GWX Control Panel (previously named GWX Stopper) is a free program that you can use to do the following on Windows 7 and Windows 8:

  • Remove the "Get Windows 10" icon that appears in your notification area.
  • Prevent your Windows Update control panel from upgrading your computer to Windows 10.
  • Prevent your computer from secretly downloading Windows 10 installation files.
  • Detect and remove the hidden Windows 10 installation files if they're already on your PC.
  • Optionally monitor your computer for unwanted Windows 10-related settings and files. (New in version 1.6.)
GWX Control Panel really works, is safe and easy to use, and gives you the option to re-enable the icon and upgrade notifications if you're ever ready to move forward with Windows 10.

I thought the windows 10 was this one sorry it took so long I had to find it KB3035583

I also deleted these telementary to ms
KB2952664
KB3022345
KB3068708
KB3075249
KB3080149

This worked for me but not for you try n4gix solution a try it might be a lot easier, thanks n4gix if it comes back to haunt me I will give it a go. My system is clean of w10 stuff.

Problem solved! The GWX Control Panel got rid of all the files associated with Windows 10 including that pesky Windows 10 Get Started panel in my update notification section. Now, I seem to be having downloading issues with the updates I want. I can select them without the Windows 10 issues and click "Download Updates" button... but the system just sits there, it doesn't seem to connect to Microsoft, (or where ever) to get the updates to download and install. One bloody issue after another.

Sometimes this can be slow however and maybe I'm just being impatient.....

At any rate, THANKS for the link to The GWX Control Panel. That thing did exactly what it was supposed to do.

N4gix,

Thank you SO, SO much for the link to that download. It worked! Got rid of all traces of Windows 10 for me, plus that damn nagging popup.

I dumped Windows 10 (after initially praising it) because it kept causing a BUNCH of problems for me. I am not going to reinstall unless I have to.... NC

Thanks Bill, I also appreciate this little program and 'thank you' for informing us about it..

I had the Windows 10 issue more on my wife's machine than I did mine but I still ran it on both and ALL is now well !!!

Bill D.

My thanks also, I ran it, and not only has the nag icon gone away, Windows update is now back under control, and, strangely enough, my systm boots and runs faster.

However brief the victory may be, it feels great to put one in the win column against the man .
Thanks for the link, it works great.

You are all most welcome. I hadn't been bothered with the Win10 merry-go-round until I set up a new sim machine a month or so ago, and it was driving me nuts with that constant "Nag" popup every time I turned around. I don't remember where I first learned of this little utility program, but in less than five minutes my problem was solved. :applause:

Thanks from me too.

W10 I concede was faster than 7, but it caused me a lot of issues too which I found clunky and just plain non user friendly. Then when I reverted to 7 I initially thought it had managed the downgrade very well apart from a sluggish mouse issue. Then after a few days I began to notice a whole bunch of issues that did not exist before. I had to do a complete format and reinstall of 7 which is great but takes an age to get things back to where they were before. I still haven't got around to installing any sims whatsoever. Frankly after 21 years I am in MSFS crisis mode having lost my enthusiasm. I'm going to hold off now until the New Year and see if I can re stoke the interest.
