Microprose B-17 Preview

Microprose! Just the name sends me back to the 80's!! I had a slew of their games that ran on my (then new!) 8086. That's where all this wallet-emptying crap started for me! LOL! F-19 Stealth Fighter for me! My son would sit in his highchair next to me and we'd play it all day. This B-17 is a far cry from those days. I also read it WILL be for 2020, but it will release to 2024 first. They stated there will also be an F model following as well. This one, unless it's a real P.O.S., will be in the hangar. Painters, get ready!!!!

Don BP;)

I noticed when he was starting the engines he didn't use any prime? He just moved the mixture control levers to rich. I have to look at a B-17 manual and see if there are primers for engine start. I think it's pretty easy to add a Garmin GPS to almost any airplane. I wish I knew how to do it myself. I like the way this airplane sits on the main gear, especially the oleo strut compression. Thanks for posting the link to that review Killbilly

Yeah, but I like having it on the panel. Besides, last time I tried to use the toolbar version, it didn't want to work right.

Edit: I just went to their site and found out my current version was a little behind. I'll see if I can try the toolbar version a little later today. (I went from 2.2.46 to 2.2.50...)

From a dev's perspective, she's not a very effective reviewer. She never does things by the book or as advised, just guesses the functions of things. She overlooks important processes and functions and flits around a cockpit like a child. On this one , she's missed so much it renders the "review" pretty worthless in my opinion. If you are going to review something or give opinions, at least know the subject and how to operate it.

Exactly! very charming but just glancing at a manual would do her a lot of good. Compared to into the blue simulations where he follows a checklist, even if he had to find one on line and leaves you feeling you understand the real aircraft even more vs her usual lets fiddle around and figure it out that leaves you feeling like this is a shallow sim that takes no real understanding.

Really, I'm no fan of AvAngel anymore.

I've given up on her. She has said that she doesn't do in-depth reviews, but rather gives general impressions. Fair enough; that's okay and there is room for that, but sometimes her lack of effort to learn a model before making a video of it becomes irritating. I remember once she was merrily flying along with the ground power unit still attached ( the AH Chipmunk maybe ? ). You can be casual, but not that casual.

There's another reviewer that I used to watch his videos, but quit. His arrogance just was too much. "Fast Times Vero". NC

I,ve done flightsimming for 30 years without them. Sure as hell don,t need them now. But i gotta be honest , socialmedia in its whole is not for me.

The problem with being a YT-reviewer/-influencer is that the (YT-)community expects new content every 5 minutes. Also, social media seems to be some sort of competition who gets the most clicks/likes/subscribers (and the perks that come with those). So it is not surprising that the quality suffers to such an extent that it hardly qualifies as an (informing) review. AvAngel is not the only one who is "guilty" of that of late. But it's her channel. I do look at YT-videos to have a closer look at a product I'm interested in buying, so I'm not necessarily interested in the opinion of the reviewer perse. A review is after all nothing more than the personal opinion of that person. And you know what they say about opinions in relation to a certain part of ones anatomy. Also remember: screenshots and video's on the developer's (or vendor's) website also only show you what they want you to see.

To keep it on topic ;-)

Preview shows me that build quality is, how to i say "rough"/"bulky" not very high end product?

Just remember that this is still in development. The entire package is still "subject to change."

Personally, I view these pre-release impressions with a five pound grain of salt. She did say that there's a lot that's still not clickable, and the textures will likely (at least I hope) improve before final release.

I somehow don't think it needs to be said that YT content is free - both to present and to consume - and that therefore, the quality can vary widely from one creator to the next.
It's also free to post comments and opinions directly to any presenter's channel. That way they aren't blindsided when they come to check in at their friendly neighborhood flightsim forum.
Just a thought

But we can comment and discuss here, surely ?

that's not up to me and nowhere did I or would I suggest that it isn't ok to do that. My point is about members being respected here and how YT posters expect all kinds of feedback on their channel - and because the comments are posted directly to the videos they concern, it's much more productive AND digestible - than say a gathering of
negative posts on a flight sim board where that person might contribute funds and enjoy the online company of likeminded flight sim enthusiasts and 'friends'.
This is about a B-17 though...so I was a bit taken aback by the sudden swerve toward critiquing a YT presenter in the middle of it - one who frequents this forum - and I said only that there is a place set aside especially for that, right where the presenter would expect it to be and nothing more or less than that.
