Announced last week, Dovetail Games - the company behind the successful
Train Simulator franchise have announced that they have acquired the rights
to distribute Microsoft Flight Simulator X Gold Edition. They have also
announced that they have signed a global licensing deal, "granting them the
rights to develop and publish all-new flight products based on Microsoft's
genre-defining flight technology".

Wonder if this is for real and why are they doing this? I never heard of "Steam"

Steam is a very nice, secure and simple way to download games without CDs. With this, i downloaded DCS world and it goes faster than the normal client... It is distributed by Valve (www.store.steampowered.com) All this, in a legal way! With Purchasing a single key/license you can run it on many PCs without limitations and problems. Ever more products (also with CDs) need Steam to install... Will it be the Future of PC Games? The only stupid thing is that maybe without internet connection it does not function. I am very curious of what new will bring FSXI (or FS11)... :) Be positive! We Flightsimmer need a new FSX :D

It appears to be a download site... like a conventional web store with a fancy name. A quick check reveals that they sell many games - including X-Plane, and now I presume FSX.

It's what comes out the ears of simmers at the next titbit of gossip on the future or otherwise of FSX or MS Flight: incredible the effects of so little information... There's been a load of speculation on other FSX forums about this news for a week or so, but you might find the Births, Marriages and Deaths columns of your local newspaper more interesting. And informative.

thank you, Buzz Killington

in other news, the stuff we don't know is greater than the stuff we do know

carry on

"granting them the rights to develop and publish all-new flight products based on Microsoft's

???m
do they mean Microsoft "Flight" when they write "all-new flight products....."

Seems that P3D has already left the station.

:dizzy:

Steam developing stuff? Are they not a distribution company? Methinks it's only FSX. & as far as add-ons, there are far more experienced developers out there, both payware & freeware. So, will it affect us that already have FSX? I cannot think of any reason why. In any case, it's an old, discontinued program. P3D would be the obvious upgrade path.
BTW, Steam will also be distributing X-Plane. I think all this is, is a new distribution stream for developers. MS$ & X-Plane will no longer need to carry inventory & all the distribution problems (worldwide)

It's called Prepar3D and available from Lockheed Martin.

Wait until FSX Gold is on sale on Steam and then get a copy in case MS finally axes the activation servers for the original version or in case your installation DVDs become unreadable.

I think that last bit is what this boils down to.

Hopefully Steam will somehow maintain the activation server process for the existing audience, so everyone doesn't have to buy FSX Gold yet another time. Or better yet, find a way to update any FSX current installation to remove the need to rely on anything other than Steam for future installs and maintenance updating.
