For those that want to know what is behind there Register wall....

AVSIM is being told by multiple sources that Microsoft, after years of dickering and sometimes murky intentions, has sold the license to the FS franchise. We are not able to name our sources, but we can say they are authoritative and have been involved at various times in pursuing acquisition of this license. We can also tell you that the licensee is not one that we would have thought to have been a logical candidate in terms of direct knowledge of the product, leading us to conclude that this licensee had the deepet pockets. We will be providing more news on this story as it develops. We look forward to an official announcement at the E3 coming this week.

So to folks like me who have no clue what the big picture is concerning this selling of the license.......,someone please "learn" me? NC

Well, gee, NC - I guess if someone buys the license to a product or a service, it would mean they acquire the rights to the copyrighted image ("logo") of the product, as well as all of its proprietary information, in the case of software - which, I suppose, would mean we may have someone who has bought the entire package, all source codes, programming, etc - may now (hopefully) be able to issue updates to the basic product, provide support, and somehow encourage further development. Just a guess, and I'm probably wrong on at least a part of it . . . but we can all hope for the best.:encouragement:

Something else that came to mind - if the license has been sold, the name should have been sold with it, in theory anyway. It may still be known as MSFS, or it may now change its name if it means that somehow MS has to be paid a royalty on anything developed by the new owner for sale to the general public. We've got a pretty "brainy" group on this site. We must have someone in the forum(s) who is familiar with corporate law and can provide some educated guesswork on this one.

Thanks for the explanation, SSI01. I understood the acquisition part of the sale. Mainly, I was wondering if anyone knew what it might mean for the simulation community, but am sure at this point it would all be conjecture. NC

This shows how much I knew about Microsoft.
I thought they sold the license to Lockheed a number of years ago.

The Microsoft "Entertainment" licence would cover several platforms. Not only did they have the Flight Simulator platforms but also Microsoft Train Simulator and several other 'games'. Lockheed Martin purchased the FSX engine and upgraded it and produced P3D.

As an owner of MSTS I would love to see someone buy that platform and finish the development of MSTS v2 which was on the verge of release when Microsoft canned all 'entertainment' development. With the improvement ORBX has made to textures and scenery in both FSX and P3D one can only imagine how someone with the vision of John Vennema and Orbx could improve the texture and scenery of MSTS.

Just to clarify, Lockheed Martin has a licensing agreement with Microsoft regarding the ESP platform. While ESP (and by extension, P3D) does share the same simulation engine as Flight Simulator X, it is its own separate product.
Thanks orion.. the difference is important.

Going even further back, Microsoft posted the descriptions when the various bits were moved under the umbrella of Microsoft Developers Network (2009)

Microsoft Flight Simulator and Microsoft ESP

Built on the core technology behind Flight Simulator X, Microsoft ESP is a visual simulation platform that brings immersive games-based technology to training and learning, decision support, and research and development modeling for government and commercial organizations.

Of specific interest to the Flight Simulator developer community is the opportunity to expand on the powerful Microsoft ESP serious games simulation platform which is licensed to be sold by third parties and used in commercial, non-entertainment settings.

The best news of all for Flight Simulator add-on developers is that many of the same APIs are common between Flight Simulator and Microsoft ESP. Add-ons developed for Flight Simulator can be transitioned for use with Microsoft ESP with few issues.

Not the first time M$ has sold a product - Crimson Skies went to UbiSoft and then to Sony and died of starvation after that. Guess we'll have to see who has the 'deep pockets' and whether they are open, or sewn shut.

i know nothing about any of this stuff...but my first thoughts were...well if someone new comes in...lets say its a corporation like textron (i know its not likely..dont jump me) but what if they come in and say..yo dudes..all of this and all your addons are now OURs and you need to pay up or stop developing......the way i see it..this could also be the death throw for FSX and all MSFS sims........

We don't know anything yet so lets be optimistic instead of negative. Positive thoughts are all good until proven otherwise,

Licensed is not the same as owned. The worst that could happen is who ever makes the new FS locks us out by changing code so the current FS things and tools don't work.

Hmm. I expect a solid week's worth of pointless bickering around the various forums with not one fact to back up the arguments. I'm outta this until there's a solid announcement from an interested party.

P'raps X-Plane bought it thinking they can inherit a sizeable customer base...... No? I'll get my hat...... :pop4:

Rumors and speculation with no evidence, chill people, we have heard this type of thing before.
No hard evidence, not worth the time wasted on the ifs, buts and maybes.
