In all my years of reading, I thought I remember seeing a picture of a design that resembled a Bell P-39 or Fisher P-75 in layout. But, in addition to have the engine in the middle, it also had the propeller in the middle of the fusalage, behind the wing. The prop was mounted on a "spinner" the same diameter as the fusalage at that point.
I don't remember why such a weird design was proposed; other than to pack more weapons in the nose. I also don't know if it ever got past the design stage.
Internet searches to date have been fruitless. I think I saw it in an "Air Classics" magazine from the late 1970s. Does this ring a bell with anyone?
