Midway 1942

I am trying to get info on the locations of buildings and hangers on Eastern Island at Midway.I have looked all over the net and have found two pictures of eastern Island one made in 1941 and the other in 1944.This doesn`t help much as to the above locations in 1942.If you have any info plase post, Thanks.

I did some hunting for you. I don't know if you have seen these but look particulatly at link #5, the last one. It is a HTML document and on page 1-4 it gives the locations of buildings on Sand Island. I did not have time to read the whole thing but it is a the survey completed for the conversion of the e isalnd to a refuge.

Also in one of the links details that one designer was used for the designer of the buildings and a search shows that the firm is still in existence today in Michigan. Good possible source there.

John Ford

John Ford filmed a documentary on the Battle of Midway. Some of his on-the-spot footage is in it. Maybe there would something of use in the film.

Fellows Thanks so much for your help. One thing I found out was that the men on Eastern Island lived in under ground bomb shelters.There were some tents but I figure they were for the crews that came in the last severial weeks before the battle.

Oh man... to get the VTP right (islands and shape of the atoll) is a nightmare! Crosses over two sections... ugh.

Straight from the horses mouth "men of the 6th Marin Defense Battalion 50th anniversary Battle of Midway" on eastern island they lived in slip trenches 23 hours a day permission was required to make a head call or leave your position. There was 18 inches of standing water in the trances and it rose and fell with the tide. This was a true do or die with no places to go, you simply were gone to die in place.

Figure #12 should do quite nicely for facilities on eastern. The area on the ocean side is the magazine area. Just remember that the water table is 18-24 inches down. So all bunkers were at ground level covered with sand and sanded badged.

Eastern Island was only about 12FT above the water at its highest point. Sand island was about 36 ft above the water.Unlike Wake Island the Midway defenders were dug in real well with plenty of supplies and had traps set all over the two islands.
