MiG-15/MiG-17 SP4

I've been to the Flight1 forum looking for the new service pack for both MiG aircraft. I have them both in my sim and they are first-rate birds to fly. Questions:

1)If you've got the basic aircraft installed on your sim, are you going to be charged for this upgrade?

2)If you install the upgrades in SP4, are you going to lose your 2D panel in either or both aircraft? Important as I prefer to fly from the 2D panel.

3)If the upgrade will take away your 2D cockpit, is it possible to salvage the situation and at least install the new textures that come with the upgrade while keeping your 2D panel?

4)Where specifically does one find these service packs?

The English in the adverts is a little fractured which is causing me some caution about installing this thing. I'd hate to mess up something that is already functioning well.

Flight1 don't distribute separate service packs, you download a new 'Wrapper' from their site which will give you the fully updated version. So the answers to your questions are:

1) No, you get the upgraded pack automatically, just use the same key/account details
2) If it had a 2-D panel before I think it unlikely they would remove it in a later upgrade
3) You will get a whole new install (they recommend uninstalling previous versions), so not really
4) On the Flight1 site http://www.flight1.com/

Dead on, Ian - I've written Flight1 about it, but no word back yet on an exact release date. They do such great work with the aircraft, the directions are a little hard to follow due to translation problems but I can work around that. Looking forward to what it will have.

If I read that correctly, the versions at Flight1 are now (or will be within the next day or so) the fully updated versions.

The wording on the Flight1 site is a little confusing, for sure. SP4 has been available for the MiG-15 for a few weeks now. SP4 for the MiG-17 was just released. I've d/l'ed and installed both with no issues. I think the developer just bundled the reannouncement the MiG-15 SP4 with the new MiG-17 SP4. Both are available on Flight1. You'll need to completely uninstall any previous versions before reinstalling...so in that sense they're not 'upgrades', per se....since you can't just layer SP4 over the existing packs.

With SP4, the 2D panel has been eliminated in both the -15 & -17. I'm not sure if you can simply add the previous 2D panels back in, as the developer seems to have included some sort of coding that automatically 'skips' the 2D panel when switching views.

Note: This version contains Service Pack 4 (SP4). If you are upgrading from an earlier version, simply select the Reinstall option from the downloaded EXE. Uninstall your previous version first.

Thank you Mark. Maybe the secret lies in downloading the service pack, unzipping them into a "hold" folder, then sorting through them to see what can be used and installed on your own.

Second option - remove all the MiGs from the aircraft or hangar folder - install the new SPs - put the old textures and config edits into the new aircraft folders and config files - run them in the flight sim - then attempt to reinstall the 2D panel. If that doesn't work, pull any new textures out of the SP4 MiG files, take the new SP4 MiGs back out of FS9, put the old ones back in, then install the new textures, if any, into the old MiG files we will have just put back in. Trying to decide if this is worth all the hassle. To be honest, this sim works so well now I'm not sure I want to change it. The only thing I'd really be interested at this point would be any new textures.

Your second option might work, although be forewarned that I think the naming convention on the SP4 textures is slightly different than with previous versions. There appear to be some additional textures with SP4, too (more VC texture sheets). The developer states that all previous textures will work...with some tweaking.

I noticed one new skin for the MiG-17 with SP4; a Cuban AF texture. I'm honestly not sure if there are others. If you're happy with your existing SP3 install and want 2D panels, then you might as well stay with it. I really like the new gauge backlighting & removable GPS unit with the SP4 models. Other than that, most of the changes are pretty subtle.

Good luck.

Well, ive reinstalled my model and it was fairly painless, There is no 2D panel, you cycle straight into VC mode, then tower, then spot, seems to be something built into the code of the model, dont think you could add the 2D panel from the old model.
You get a couple of extra models, but mostly its the models and skins from the older packs, although they do look better, and the reworked VC's nice aswell, im happy with the update but the lack of 2D panel may be an issue with some.
cheers ian

Ian have you figured out how to get the rear canopy in the -15Us to open and then close? I've had problems with that.

Had this on another model, isn't that down to a hidden gauge on the VC? I'll have to check when I get home.

Z - Will load the bird and give that a try. Somewhere in the deep recesses of my memory is something telling me it indeed opens the rear canopy but will not close it. We'll see.

Andy - will post results of the ground check for yours and Z's review.

Z - you are correct - with my sim, or the aircraft's current config, for some reason it takes a while for this action to occur.

I hope that someone from Flight1 is reading this. I have all my original documentation (reinstall password etc.). When I try to put in my totally correct e-mail and password (to open the download), it will not recognise them. The Flight1 support sends me to the Bear support section, but they can't answer this Flight1 problem. Bear say they have forwarded my e-mail address to Flight1. So far: no contact from Flight1 after 2 days. I am NOT pleased with Flight1. Bill

Hi Wings, have you still got your "bearmig-17,key" anywhere on your system, mine's in My computer-My documents, after downloading the udate, and openning it, i had to lead the installer to this key, and i installed it no problem.
cheers ian

I love the SP4

:applause:

Well, broke down and installed the MiG-17 SP4 after pulling and saving the MiG-17s I originally had on the system. Bought the MiG-15 on a CD thorugh Pilot Shop, and updating will require some info from F1's customer service for that. On hold for now. Re the MiG-17 SP4 - yes, there are three more models with maybe four individual aircraft among them. One of them is actually a Lim-5 that was in the SP3's "LIMs" textures, fielded as a separate Lim-5 aircraft in SP4. The textures are a little smoother. Tried converting the SP4 textures using the DXT3 tool with the original MiG-17's texture files but that doesn't work, they grey out. Had some inop panel switches in virtual cockpit of SP4 plus the landing gear switch handle was constantly cycling up and down, would remain down for a while after being batted there using the mouse. Sure miss those pop-ups from the 2D panel, as well as the 2D panel itself. For these reasons and others, I pulled SP4 and put the originals back in. Found with SP4 you do get the 2D panel view without the panel, all you get is the blank screen in place of the panel. I noticed, however, that when using the fixed views in the 2D screen without the panel and looking around various points of the compass using the joystick hat switch, the rest of the interior of the cockpit does display. Interesting.
