Does anyone know if there's an updated air file for Mike Stone's FS8 Leopard (the only model that I know of of that aircraft) cos the Leopard Inter model off Simviation has a rather odd flight profile (not to mention paint - the screenshot is one of prototype two that i did in about 10 minutes).

I've been trying to update the panel for ir for a while and had almost completed it (I have a diagram of the origonal layout) when i lost it in a hard disk crash...

Anyway to restate does anyone know of an aifile update?

I know Mike never did one. When FS9 came out and he started updating the 2002 models, there were a couple that never got enough interest in the first place, so he didn't update those.
 
hmm, thats a shame it has the potential to be a good model, its cretainly the only one of its kind around. I have a lot of interest in it (my dad was on the design team....) and can probabl get most of the data to make .air/.cfg but i don't have the knowledge....

Thought I'd bring this up again to say that i've played with an airfile so that the Leopard flies a bit better, its been a total modification from another VLJ airfile. Anyway I was wondering if some people might be interested in having a play with it and seeing what they come up with. I peosonally think it still seems to underpowered at takeoff and too floaty on landing but I don't really know what to do about it.

I used to like flying Mike's Leopard. I deleted it when I installed FS9. Now, with your work, Firebar, I might just be tempted to download and modify it and give it another go. :ernae:

I saw a real C.M.Leopard at Cranfield sometime in the mid/late 1990's (can't remember the exact year probably '97/8) and was stuck by how small the thing was.
 
Yeah it is a tiny aircraft. I think one is at Bournemouth (001) and 002 is elsewhere now. I still remember seeing 001 tucked in a corner at Old Sarum a while ago and was struck by how minute it is. You don't really get a sense of scale from the photos.

I've been working on a panel for the Leopard too (from a diagram I have on the wall next to me in fact) and when I've finished that (may take a while) I'll certainly share it. I'd nearly finished it a while ago but lost it to a HD crash.
 
really shows it's small size in the image on the left, that red-arrow is a Gnat, and they're tiny :icon_lol: and the tip pod on the right looks like a Jet Provost :icon_lol::icon_lol:
 
I've tried making a model of the Leopard myself but I just dont have the experience, I just cant get the fuselage shape right. Its 4 constant radius arcs joined at the corners by fillets. I'll attach a 3 view (it might not have all the details of the jane's one but is more accurate in shape) incase anyone wants it.

Its much easier in cases like that to just create half of a cross section Spline (in Gmax) and then create a ton of copies of the Spline in rows along the axis, then start scaling each one to line up with the drawing of the side of the fuselage. Then when you are done, join them, and cover them with a surface; (Cross Section then Surface). (Always do half of the fuselage, then create a mirror copy of it later when you are happy with the first half).

When I am making a sophisticated fuselage, I will usually go that route. Makes it alot easier..

Thanks for the tips Bill. I have played with some things for the leopard (lost them in my HD crash hough) I had it all working except for the nose and tail ends of the fuselage, which looked a little wonky and the area around the windows, which i just couldn't get right. Wings and nacelles were okay and as the surfaces are all moving they were alright too. A big problem is that the flaps are also lift dumpers and so have -/+ 45 deflection and that the entire instrumanr panel moves with the canopy.

I guess I didn't read too well, you're looking for air file fixes which I can't do. But I was looking at the CFG and it doesn't match the one I worked on. Is there more than one Stone model of this?

Mike only did one version that I'm aware of. There's probably a few modified versions floating around somewhere. Bob Chicilo is famous for modifying stuff that Mike did - not always with complete accuracy. (He added thrust reverst to his mods for the KC-135R when the real thing has none.)
 
The cfg that i posted was one i've played with a bit.

Looks nice smoothie, ifyou PM me an email adress I've got about 40 photos that I can send you (i'll have to scan them mind) that you might find interesting, including randomly the inside of the nose undercarriage bay.

Little bit of consructive criticism.... There is a pronounced line down theside of the fuselage, which didn't exist in reality, remember aech side was a constant diameter arc! Looks good though.

The Nacelles are the Circular NPT shape, the Leopard actually shifted to the FJX-1 which had a squarer nacelle due to peripherals attached to it.

For the wing when I was playing I just used a basic ARA Laminar flow profile as a template, I have data on the actual profiles somewhere (it changes from root to tip) but could never find a drawing of their shape.

If you're doing that I better get back to making a panel!

yeah the line was an error from poly pushing, i'll PM you an E-mail address, ideally if i can get this made maybe Bill will assist me in getting it FS9 & X compatible just so we cover both bases....:icon_lol: you know what them FSX'ers can be like :monkies:
