Military Sim: ARMA II + Track IR

I just bought this game today.

wow! If you are interesting in a more "realistic" shooter, this is it. The graphics are amazing and it's an one-shot kill type of game. So you can't be rambo-ling around or you get killed in about 2 seconds.

I'm still on my first few missions - it takes forever to finish one...because you have to be super careful. The landscape is also huge and completely open to you. I've shot only 1 enemy in the last 3 missions (and seen maybe 5...they are all hiding). LoL

the best part: you can use this game with TrackIR! It's the first time i've used TrackIR besides FS9...and it makes the experience very realistic...

I haven't figured out how to take screenshots yet, so here are some i grabbed from their website: (the realtime shadowing on everything + bloom + motion blur is crazy nice! The first time the game loaded up i thought i was looking at a pre-rendered CG sequence....until you move the mouse and realise it's real-time!)

It's great! I always find my heart pounding when you hear those rounds crackling overhead. There's always "WOW!" moments to be had in online co-op.

Just today I rode into the "hot-zone" on a chopper and got dropped off a little too far out. It was just me and another grenadier. We started heading towards the objective and were noticing a lot of enemy Mi-8's in the area. About 1 klick from the objective an Mi-8 flew overhead and enemy soldiers began jumping out and parachuting down. We ran into the woods and got behind a stone wall. As the enemy began to land we opened fire and quickly dispatched all 15 or so. We got up, and I took the lead into the city.:tgun2:

Track IR is really helpful in Arma as it enhances my situational awareness (I can be scanning the area while running to the next cover.) I had to turn off motion-blur when running though because that mixed with Track IR gave me a headache.

I downloaded the demo about a week ago and I trying my best to be frugal and wait, but every time I see a new post or screenshots on this game I want!

It's a looker alright...
As if I needed another distraction to eat up those precious hours ;)
May have to look a little more closely...

now that I have a new rig with plenty of HD space, I went out and got this yesterday myself. Fixing to fire it up!!

Once I get the hang of it, I am wanting to give the COOP a go (main reason I bought it!)

Is this a single-player game or MMO? Do you need a broadband connection (I only have dial-up)?

single player and multiplayer, broadband required for online play really, think dail up would really struggle :engel016:

Thanks, Stitz....sometimes there's a broadband requirement that will torpedo me. Don't play much online.

Game looks great...will see if Best Buy has it in stock.

Are ARMA and ARMA II separate standalone games? I see ARMA Gold and wondering if ARMA II is the addon. Looks like an extension of Call of Duty 4..... only better. But CoD4 was good too.

Looks like topnotch graphics. With this I could uninstal a lot of FPSs that I've
played to death.

Arma2 is a stand alone game/mil sim. Arma gold is Armed assault and queens gambit (addon for arma) bundeled.

and you'll be uninstalling quite a few fps and not bother with most of the new ones, they feel so "tunneled" compared to arma2's open world :engel016:

Sounds good Stiz.... ARMA II it is. It's time I get rid of some clutter and get some HDD space back again.

definitely get the 1.03 patch...since it adds the ability to turn on AA on your graphics card.

this game does require some serious horse power to run (or at least to look like those screenshots). If you are having FPS problems, just turn off the "posteffect" option (motion blur + bloom). I went from 20fps with it on, to about 45 w/ it off. For an one-shot kill game, ultra smooth FPS is a must...

I desperately want to upgrade but it's not possible at the moment. I would need to buy 2 copies as my wife is an ARMA 1 nut like me and while my rig can run the ARMA 2 demo at about 34 FPS (if I disable the post effects) hers chugs along at 7 FPS if you are lucky with everything set low! :isadizzy:

It looks like I will have to upgrade her box (P4 single core (3.4 Ghz) and 256 Mb 6800GS GFX card) before I can even play ARMA 2. :frown:

To make matters worse a buddy of mine in the UK who used to play ARMA 1 with us on a regular basis went out and got ARMA 2 expecting us to upgrade too and now he is cursing me cus it's sitting on his HD unused until I can upgrade. :violent:

Wasn't Operation Flashpoint the grandaddy of ARMA? Most fun with that was racing ZSU-23's thru the villages, blasting everthing in sight!:pop4:
