more ATC grief

Is there any way to alter the on-screen display of the ATC text?
I tried to start out a flight in cloudy weather, and there was nowhere I could move the window so as to be able to read it.

Can the window be made opaque rather than transparent?

Can the font be altered?

Should I just suck it up and attribute it to old eyes?

Google didn't turn up any real answers.

I'm afraid you might be stuck. I poked around in the fs9.cfg and didn't find anything that would help there. There is a possibility that the language.dll may have parameters that control the transparency of the ATC window, but editing that requires more skill than what I have.

I looked at language.dll, and ran away. Above my skill level, too.

Thanks, Tom, for looking. Another M$oft oversight.

With the right tool, it's actually not that tough to dig into a dll or even a few exe's. I use a program called Resource Hacker to peek into files once in a while, and even extract icons that I like from exe's. I even managed to add an icon to an app that didn't have one once. But going in and changing the code that's inside is a whole different game. If you want to play around, rule #1 is MAKE A BACKUP COPY! Then, head here for the program:

And remember - no redistribution of altered files without permission...

On the Title bar of the ATC window right click and select Undock.

This will make the ATC window a pop up window. The background behind the text will become solid blue and you will be able to read it.

If you have multiple displays you can move it over to the other window.

I can't. If I right click on any window, the undock and hide menu bar selections are greyed out. Only Close window option works.

The Hide Menu option is checked, but I can't figure out what that means, since it is greyed out and I can't uncheck it.

UPDATE:

I found the answer. It's a Microsoft thing. You can't do this in full screen mode-- has to be in windowed mode.
In windowed mode, it works just as you said.

Thanks for pointing me down the right road.

Full Screen mode is a "hack" from M$. It basically overrules the settings to create this great 'gamer look' but it ruins many things. Like you found it inhibits many normal Windows functions and disables a second/third monitor (and is a leftover from the old days of CFS1, etc).

While some people contend Full Screen gives better viewing, it has that price. Often better to run in Windowed mode ( after all it IS 'Windows') and run it maximized if you want the big view.

Some folks insist that FullScreen gives better view and better frame rates.
I have not yet had a PC where that was actually true, but this is just the 7 or 8 FS PCs I have personally owned and run....your results might vary :)
So I stick with Windowed mode and a maxed view as well.

Cheers
Stefan

thank you all for the info.

It wasn't the answer I wanted, but it is the answer.

Sometimes I'm reminded of George Burns in Oh GOD, where he admits to some questionable things like mosquitoes and gnats. If God can make what we perceive to be errors, then who can truly blame M$oft?:kilroy:
