the worst and so far, unprecedented fire for its initial spread, the Valley fire,is at 61,000 acres, with 400 structures lost, one death,4 injured helitack crew members with 2nd degree burns.5% containment, one town,Middletown has been 85% destroyed, these homes and commercial buildings were considered safe at one point due to the distance from the vegetation and all the concrete and pavement.nope..this shows that in a wildfire that was so intense basically isnt safe.they are comparing the start of this fire,to the fires in Australia.no major loss of life like there, but the rate of spread and destruction on property.

the Butte fire is at 71,063 acres, its slowed way down with a 30% containment,135 homes,75 commercial buildings and unknown outbuildings.NO injuries on this fire as reported.

local news shows are showing nothing but the fires this morning.

one really cool thing is that a local indian casino ,Jackson Rancheria resort and casino, near Jackson Ca,very close to the Butte fire, has closed the casino and asked non locals to leave, alot of asian tourists stay at the casinos to gamble ect,i suppose they offered refunds ect,but they emptied the hotel ,set up barrack style sleeping arrangements,3 and even 4 levels of cots like bunk beds,in the rooms to house evacuees. the kitchens in the hotel and casino areas are cooking 24 hrs a day,and not just peanutbutter n jelly sandwiches, but really good food.

at Calistoga fairgrounds, they opened the "snackbar" at the speedway, and are fixing real food also.

both places are serving all these people for free ofcourse,,the speedway may be re-paid but the Casino is doing all they are for free, and at thier cost.awesome...

new news

the community of Anderson Springs is gone now as well.people living there had only minutes to flee.

Bad fire season for sure.

Hopefully luck changes for the better soon.

Like a hurricane keep your eyes and ears open and don't trust it. They don't always do what you expect them to.

Daveroo , people see this on the news almost every evening but it just doesn't sink in how catastrophic this has been and how many lives this has effected . Bless those firefighters who have given their lives to protect the life and property of others . Maybe the skies will open up and drop some slow steady rains for a few days .

I agree, however last night it was on the evening news and my grand-daughter (6) started to cry when she saw peoples homes in flames. So it does have an effect. She was still affected and talking about it an hour later when she was collected to go home.

yeah, its pretty devastating.spoke to a nurse today who lives in middletown, her home was spared, but 2 sisters and her anut lost thier homes.she stood there and cried..i waited and held her hand for a good 15 minutes, she was finaly able to regain her composure and she headed back into the hospital for work...very sad.

Hi Dave,
You haven't met Lisa yet, but one of the girls she supervises at work has a boyfriend that is fighting up that way right now! The most amazing aspect of this tragedy, is the utmost unselfish spirit, (he couldn't wait to go), of this young man to put himself in harms way to protect life and property without compunction for his own safety!

I'm starting to understand your admiration!

Your friend in the Valley!

I spent many years in the valley, working at NAS Lemoore. Been there when there was fires in the surrounding hills, but the pictures I've seen taken from the valley are like nothing I've ever experienced. Prayers out to all those affected by these fires. Can't wait for the temps to go down a bit, and maybe some rain.

hey bud, yeah its not just admiration on my part, when i was a fire fighter here,my favorite part of it was when we would become "state fire fighters" in summer and we would work out of a CDF station (ok ok CalFire, lol) doing wildland,we were never sent on medical aides,we were there for wildland and even structure fires,we basically were a hotshot crew, even then CDF had 3 man crews, but we had no less than 7 on the engine, and usually 3 to 4 more guys who were there waiting as "when needed"....it kills me to see all this stuff and i cant go get on the lines and do SOMETHING,,,,id even like to go relieve the law enforcement guys at a road block,i could do that in my powerchair, but i know they would never allow it.

when do you leave on your trip?...maybe yall can make it up here after you get back?..id love to meet Lisa, and the Baynes are looking forward to meeting you guys now too.
