More Graphic Settings Conundrums

Still having fun! However....

I have read the various graphic setting posts on the Board and it has become pretty clear to me that performance signficantly declines near the ground-- anywhere from 2 to 10x order of magnitude.

I do not have the most up-to-date machinery, I do however, have something very reasonable:

AMD dualcore 4600+ O.C. to 2.6 Mhz
4 gig memory
Asus factory O.C. ATI 4850 GPU PCIe 512 MB
Resolution bumped to 1600x1200
I just upgraded today to the newest 9.1 Catalyst drivers.

My settings are currently a modest 4/2/2/3/2

Enough on that... flying out of Esc 3 (nearby town!) I get anywhere from 18 frames to... yes... 4 frames per second when sweeping quickly across with pan view. Once I achieve apx 4,000+ ft ASL, my frame rates can exceed 60 FPS.

At issue is that combat invariably closes to ground level eventually (for me). And then my system can begin to dog. I apologize for the comparison again, but in RB3D there was a feature that turned off "ground clutter" upon entering combat.

Is there any possibility that such a feature can be found/added to BHAH via a keyboard command or something else? Very frankly, this FPS issue (and I'm not upgrading futher at this point) is making this product move from "A" quality to "B-" quality. Not intending to be offensive but if I were a reviewer that's how I'd call it.

Hello,

We have noted in the forum that some users with the newer ATI cards are reporting low FPS.
I can say that OFF does not change any of the CFS3 DX systems nor the way CFS3 renders graphics.

I have no idea why the new ATI cards are so poor with CFS3 but does not mean that we don't care - I simply have no solution for you at the moment other than to say try lower slider settings in CFS3 config.

P3 was optimised in quite a few places over P2 and I think generally for the extra eye candy most players are happy - but that is on Nvidia hardware.

We will look into this but will be after we have sorted the main issues including MP.
I personally will buy an ATI card and test OFF and see if I can come up with some decent settings - I hope that helps and its all I can say.

Please be patient as I cannot do this soon.

Best

I looked at that Polovski; however according to TweakGuides the SmartGart feature to which the link references is only available to AGP cards, note PCIe cards (which I have).

Thx
