Why is it that whenever I try an update of a plane that includes changeing the config and airfile,I either get no textures, strange colors or the plane dissapears compleatly?
An example I downloaded the Gloster Gladiator and the Malta Sea Gladiator update and the plane had a red and black color.Know I know this is very festive but I don't think the planes based on Malta were bright red and black.I always save the old files so I put them back so now the plane is ok.
I've had the same problems with one of the Canberra paks and one which I think OBIO made for a Heinkel I think not sure.
Now I'am not saying it's something wrong with the updates ,it's something I'am doing wrong but don't know what. The readme's usually say just save your old conig and air files and replace with the new ones ,so where am I screwing up? thanks

Compare the following lines between the new and the old cfg files. That will give the clue what causes the problem

title=
sim=
model=
texture=

These lines are the roadmap for FS to find the bits and pieces that make up the airplane as a whole. If the road map is incomplete you end up with either no model to show, no textures to put on it or no way for FS to calculate how the thing behaves.

Other lines are important for complete function and just finding the airplane in the selection menu but they are not 100% critical.
Usually the reason why I can't find a particular plane in the list is because the cfg line
UI_manufacturer= does not have the name I am looking for.

UI_manufacturer=JoeBlow_Cessna may be a great advertisement for the creator of the mod but I am looking for a Cessna.

so you have to compare?

So you have to compare those lines and make them the same as the old config file before you delete it?You can't just swap out one file for another. Is this right?

Yes. These lines must be the same as in the original cfg. Also, the air file must be named exactly as the original is.

It depends really on the UPDATE so to speak. If it is the same group or individual who did the first one they usually pay close attention to what their package used to be and what will work now.
If it is just any old Simmer that modded the files they might just send what ever they had used on their setup.

Most of the lines are quite flexible what you can put behind the = sign ....as long as that matches something on your system FS will be quite happy.

As long as you keep an original cfg as a copy until the new stuff is tested you can always just throw new in and see.....but ever so often that "new" might just be wrong enough to cause a CTD.

ok I think I've got it now

I think I understand it now ,I always thought you just swapped one file for the other ,didn't know you had to change some file lines to match the old one. Thanks to all
