More RAAF textures for BSK Spitfire MkVC

AGAS 5

Charter Member
I can't believe it's been over 3 years since I've opened the paint tin .....

So here we have it... they've been uploaded and should be ready to download soon.

Merry Christmas to all

Pete

Looking great Pete. Well done! BTW, do you still have the full set of your RAAF textures for KM's B-24s?
:ernae:
Mike

Thanks guys, I appreciate it :jump:

Mike, I still have the templates. GR-D can be found here though along with a couple of USAAF B-24D's... just click on the link below...

Pete

Hi AGAS. Are all those four-cannon aircraft or is that just the model you're showing the skins off on?

They're all for the MkVC - depicted by brunosk with four cannons. The RAAF MkVC had the outboard cannons removed leaving just a stubby shroud.

Cheers,

Pete

Hi agas5,
They are nice as always! I grabbed them already and will give them a try later tonight!

Removing the outer cannons wouldn`t be a major deal I think.
Bruno, please think about that, please!!

BTW: SopwithC had noted to use his skin on the Mk.Vb probably becuase of the same fact.

Now, did the RAAF really use Vb`s or had they only the Vc ?

According to "Spitfire, Mustang & Kittyhawk in Australian Service" by Stewart Wilson, the RAAF - in Australia - had only one MkVB delivered. A58-163 (EF735) was delivered in March 43, served with 79 Squadron and was struck off charge (scrapped) November 48.

However,

ADF Serials lists quite a few others - mostly serving with 452, 453 & 457 Squadrons and mostly whilst in the UK. Of note though is the following:

AR526 -
Delivered 25/12/42. To 457 Sqn 24/02/43 Coded "J". To 7 RSU 13/04/43. to 457 Sqn 19/04/43 Coded "ZP-V". Lost on operations from Milingimbie 02/05/43. Shot down 1 Betty and 1 Hamp 15/03/42 and 1 Betty before loss 02/05/43.

So there definately were some. My assumption is that Stewart Wilson is refering to those aircraft actually purchased by Australia and ADF serials is refering to those that were sent over by Churchill with 452, 457 Squadrons RAAF and 54 Squadron RAF to form 1 Fighter Wing RAAF.

WRT the outer cannons.... I just had an idea..... I might include an alpha channel in a texture to make them tranparent. I'll through up a screen shot later on and see what ya think....

Cheers,

Pete

oops.... thanks again for the compliments..... it does mean a lot to me :)

............:ernae:nice work PETE:ernae:
........................LOOKS GREAT
............EXCELLENT TO SEE YOUR WEATHERED BRUSHWORK AGAIN:applause:

Ummmmmm - what link?

Hi SPman, the one in my sig block that says " AGAS 5 Textures "

G'day egypt !! Thanks for that mate. I really enjoyed doing this one :jump:

I believe both cannons are mapped to the same area so using an alpha channel is out....

Cheers,

Pete

They are just stunning skins, can't wait for them to become available. :)

Stewart Wilson is correct in stating that only one Mk.Vb was received in Australia by the RAAF. And that was, as mentioned by AGAS 5, A58-163. All 244 Mk.Vc's (and the one Mk.Vb) were armed with 2 cannon and four machine guns.

The Mk.Vb's mentioned on the ADF Serials site all relate to Spitfires used by the No.'s 450, 452, 453 or 457 Squadrons (RAAF) whilst they were based in Britain.

The actual Squadrons that made up No.1 Wing based at Darwin in 1943 were equipped with their Spitfires when they arrived in Australia - none were flown out by by those Squadrons.

Hope that clears things up for everybody. :)

AGAS have you read Blood on Borneo (by Jack Wong Sue) or Silent Feet (by G.B. Courtney)? Both deal with the history of 'Z' Special Operations and are excellent reads.

Bruno did a Vc with two cannon in the pack didn't he? It's just a case of making sure the right model is skinned.

I just tried one of the AGAS 5 sets :applause: in the MkVb 3D model and couldn't spot any bad placement :ernae:, so I guess that the textures fit both the Vb and the Vc visual models.

Thanks for that OW - it's great stuff :ernae:

Pips - I've read Silent Feet. Courtney was my Dad's CO.... interesting bloke.... Have also read Project Kingfisher by I think Athol Moffat (sp?) - he was one of the Commonwealth war prosecutors I believe. During the mid 80's I got to view the patrol reports by CAPT Mclaren... they were quite a good read too ....

Cheers,

Pete

I think, thaks to OW, the 'problem' is solved.

Again: Nice work, guys! It is always nice to see the expert at work and what comes out in the end.

Isn`t this a nice screenie? Like a drawing!

BTW: This A/C was obviously flown by Mr. Caldwell. But when and where?
In your readme, you note it was the No. 80 Wing.

In Sopwith Cameleons Readme for the same plane, he notes it was No 1 Wing.

So I am a bit lost here to place it correctly on my site!
For the metal Spitfire: Is this true that this was used in Guildford, Surrey, England or is there another Guildford in Australia?
