Moving on

Haven't installed FSX since P3Dv3. Tried XP, but it never really got to me. P3Dv4 on the other hand is an evolving sim with a lot of $$$ behind it.

Version 5 of P3D is promising to be awesome.

I see no reason whatsoever to go to XP.

I agree 100%

I have tried XP with each new version going back to V8 but it never really bit me.
 
From a developer's perspective, XP has come an awful long way in terms of model fidelity and finish. Scenery is coming in leaps and bounds. But the one important aspect and the one for which XP was always supposed to be superior, flight dynamics, is lagging behind. They are notoriously difficult to get right and I for one am not convinced that the basics are there. For me, XP has always felt like a "plane on a stick" much like the old CFS3 used to feel compared to FS.

I don't get a feeling of "freedom" flying it but I do recognise that a lot of people are moving this way, despite the comparatively high cost of the better quality add-ons.

However, that may be because of a decline in favour of FS simulators rather than anything else. I'm not sure either that it is quite as user friendly as it could be. In the end it is horses for courses. P3DV4 /5 has massive potential and providing the funds continue to flow into it, it can only get better.:engel016:

Regarding P3D4 vs XP11... I find I enjoy both, for different reasons. I feel I could transition to XP 100% one day, but only when:

  • There is more military content (after all this is the reason I inhabit this forum)
  • Better handling for tail draggers (I love military STOL and GA STOL alike)
  • Better ATC
  • In-built seasonal scenery engine... this is a big one which keeps me going back to P3D
  • A re-built scenery engine to permit the layering of topographic tiles (aka "mesh" or DEM)... thereby getting around the need to modify, or have the same resolution, for entire 1×1 degree DSF tiles! All this (i.e. inc. handling orthophotos and seasons) is done brilliantly well in P3D and XP lags far behind. It permits the use of very fine spatial resolution DEM (e.g. from ALS, aka airborne LiDAR), which to this day is impractical in XP without also breaking other scenery... crazy! Upgrading the XP engine to match P3D's capabilities will probably break compatibility with existing scenery, which is certainly a big reason reason I'm not yet 100% committed to XP.

Of course we are all individuals, we all have different perspectives and priorities and one can't please all the people all of the time! This is just my 2p!

Oh and I was joking about FSX... I just uninstalled it so long ago I can't remember when it was.

I cannot fathom these puerile threads about abandoning one platform in favor of another. We are ALL simmers, regardless of our chosen platform. An advance in one simulator usually, eventually trickles down to others. I urge we support FLIGHT SIMULATION in whatever guise it manifests itself. Slipping the surly bonds of earth is the goal, regardless of HOW. I wish the OP contentment, and will welcome him back when he returns. :)

Well said C! I couldn't agree more. Flight sim tech in whatever form is worthy of our support. Looking forward to what 2019 brings! Happy New Year fellow simmers! let's keep our community strong.

There is nothing "puerile" about this thread. Somebody just wanting to converse on the changing of platforms. To support the hobby, people need to be comfortable with what they spend and how they spend. Also they need to be content with the product they use. Evidently, in this case, there is discontent enough to warrant, in their mind, a change.I don't consider that puerile. :engel016:
 
I recently installed X Plane 11 and am quite impressed with it. I am currently uninstalling everything in preparation for the set up of my new PC, but up until a few days ago I think X Plane 11 was number 11 of the simulators I had installed. I find each simulator has it's own strengths and weaknesses, so I find more benefit to not choose one over the other but to keep them all installed. I still use them all too.
