MS Support ending for XP next year, is this a problem?

This sounds dramatic, but what does this mean practicly, XP is perfect for my needs, almost custom made for flightsimming, CFS2,FS9 and my brief flirtation with FSX all run fine and i have no plans to upgrade. I can see a time in the future when my desk top tower is purely for simming, and using my Samsung tablet for other stuff, including posting this topic. im just wondering what the issue's will be in the future and fellow forum members thoughts on the subject.
cheers ian

No problems for you so far ..
Until you need some new hardware with no support (drivers for WinXP) or softwares no supported by WinXP

I run XP also. It seems the only updates I get now are security related. If I disconnected my XP machine from the intenet I think I would not miss the updates, it's not like the software will stop working after support stops.

The software keeps working after the support stops, but you won't receive any of the Microsoft Updates any longer. If you don't use the Microsoft Firewall, instead you have something like ESET NOD32 or Norton Internet Securities, and use their firewall... chances are you may still be OK. If your anti-virus program stops supporting XP, you may need to think about Win7 or Win8 if you want to stay connected to the internet. You can always use your XP machine for a gaming/flight sim platform only... just be sure that what you transfer from your internet machine is safe and sane... as it were. I did this for about 3 years.

I multi boot.

I have Windows XP X32 on a HD which is partitioned at half the HD and Windows 7X32 is on the other side.

I then have Windows 7X64 on another HD in my machine, so I can boot into any of the three.

I have shortcuts in Win7X32 for the CFS2 on XP. Works fine.

However, I cannot run CFS2 on Win7 from XP.

Most of my simming is now done in WIN7X32 which works fine.

If you have a good firewall and antivirus in a dual/multi boot system, I would not worry about XP not having support.

You can boot up in WIN7 and run the antivirus from there on the entire machine - including your HD with XP.

Also, when booting into XP, you can unplug your internet connection, be it wireless or LAN.

A word of caution....when M$ stopped support of WIN 98 SE, the final update to SE had some programming the made my machine go to a blue screen of death about every other time I booted up. As long as I reloaded everything EXCEPT the final update, all was well on the system.

Yes, I am a cynic. I believe that M$ is in the business to make money.

When they stop supporting an OS, I believe that they just might be inclined to include malicious code in the last update to make the non-supported old OS stop functioning so that people must go buy the newer OS.

Can I prove that? NO. Does it happen? I don't know for sure. Could it happen that way? I certainly think so.

FS 2004 worked just fine in Vista. I haven't gotten around to re-installing in Windows 7. I imagine it will work fine in 7 as long as you don't install in the "Program Files" folder. UAC will make your life miserable if you do.

If you ever want to go to W7 on the cheap, I've seen some pretty nicely spec'd out boxes on TigerDirect for under $300 - even less than $200 if you don't need much in the way of performance. They were HP lease boxes returned to the factory, cleaned up, and re-imaged with a brand-new W7 installation.

Having recently (2 weeks) experienced a HD crash, I'm typing this out on a new W7 rig. Although I've had some success tweaking it to be more XP-like in the way it looks. I'm not looking forward to the slow FS reinstall to something close to where it was when much but not all was lost. But I am very thankful, BIG THANKS FOLKS:applouse:-had to look over the new emoticons for that one), to the reconstruction of this site since there are many who went before me whom I will learn from.
