My New Puppy Co-Pilot

FAC257

SOH-CM-2025
Do to some odd circumstances I recently "lost" my little Min-Pin co-pilot that's been with me for the last 6 years. I've mentioned him several times in posts and most of the guys I've flown with on-line, knew he was always with me during my flights.

At first I wasn't going to try to replace him, but then realized just how big a void there was in my home not having a furry lap while flying and a little smiling face looking up at me when I got home. Let alone the benefit a small loyal animal companion has on my high blood pressure.

A few weeks ago I started searching the internet for a new pup. I started out wanting another Min-Pin and even contacted a local AKC breeder that has a litter of champion bloodline Min-Pins due in August. I looked at Min-Pin Rescue Groups, but never saw anything that hit me.

Then my searches just turned into looking for a proper "Lap Co-Pilot" sized pup. Over the last week I boiled it down to about three dogs at several west Florida no-kill shelters that I wanted to look at. This mornig I headed up to a shelter just south of Tampa that had a small Jack Russell mix that looked cool in his pic. When I got there, I learned that his whole family, 3 generations had been dumped. I looked at all of them but nothing seemed right.

I was getting ready to head home torn between thinking that I didn't really need a dog and disappoinment that I wasn't going home with one.

Right as I was about to leave I spotted this little guy calmly sitting off in the corner watching all the comotion of the other dogs being shown. He had an air of calm about him and a look of real wisdom in his eyes. It took about two minutes in the cage with him to realize he was exactly what I was looking for.

His name is "Peanut". He stands maybe 12" tall at the shoulders and weighs about 10 pounds. As small as he is, he has fairly beefy paws and a docked tail making him resemble a small stuffed bear. On top of the very unsually brilliant rusty brown color pattern, he's got piercing bright green eyes. Not a clue as to what breed he is, but it does look like there may be a little Min-Pin somewhere in his lineage.

He has sort of a sad story. He was brought to the no-kill shelter as a new born pup and was adopted out pretty quickly to a family. Something happened with the family's situation and they ended up dumping him back on the shelter. He's spent a good part of his 2.5 years in the shelter.

I promised the girls that work at the shelter that had all grown so attached to him that I would leave him named as is. :)

So here's the official unveiling of my new flight sim co-pilot "Peanut". In fact he's already hard at work, sound asleep in my lap as I'm on final into "MM54". :wiggle:

I'll try to get some action full body shots tomorrow. Tonight's all about bonding and napping. :)

You're right, the boy does have some big feet! :d Good that he has a new boss and good home.

Having raised Min Pins for years, I'd say he's at least half Min Pin if not more. And that Chocolate coloring is a variety for Min Pins.

Nice looking co-pilot you have there.

Willy

I almost posted a PM to you when I first started getting frustrated looking for a new Min-Pin to see if you had any advice.

I'm real happy that things worked out as it did. There's a bit of coincidence and fate that put this pup and me together. :)

That is one good looking co-pilot you have there. I would say that there is some Chihuahua and maybe some Jack Russell in his mix along with Min Pin. Those eyes....while not the same color as those found in the apple shaped head of my Chihuahua sweetie Hazel, they have the same pattern to the coloration. Hazels eyes are more, well, hazel.

Sometimes we find the best animal companions in unexpected ways...and in dogs that we were not looking for. Sometimes they even pick us out.

Hey FAC:

Sorry to hear about about your last one - I know when we always flew together I could hear her in the backround !!!

Peanut looks good and healthy tho and something tells me it won't be long before he has the "checklists" down pat!!!! Nice looking pup !!!

Well the first night went really well. It looks like he's 100% house broken. He hasn't even hinted at trying to find a spot to pee or poop in the house.

I woke up this AM and he was curled up under the blankets, which what I was wanting to happen.

He also passed the going to work test with flying colors. My weekend duties allow for pups to go along. He loved every minute of it.

And now that we've settled down for the day's flying, he's already curled up in the co-pilot spot and sound asleep. :)

At times I see a little bit of all of the possible dog breeds mentioned above. Sometimes he has some looks of a miniature version of an Australian Shepard.

Thanks Guys

Awwwww! He's a cutie pie! And I'm sure you are glad he's house broken!
No doubt he'll make a great co-pilot!

I think Peanuts is a great partner. He has the look in his eye for adventure.
Great choice, Forest.

My earlier Min-Pin had a very pronounced strut when he went for a walk.

So far this little guy's is so excited about doing anything that he more or less dances around no matter what he's doing. He even does that thing where he'll grab the leash part way up to help move things along. :)

I took him for a short walk last night to visit his new neighborhood and he was just real excited at all the new surroundings. I haven't been able to take him out yet today for a walk. It's been raining all day.

Cool looking little guy. Thanks for showing us photos of him.

Sounds like it was a slight miracle that you found him. May he live a long, healthy, fun life.

:applause:

Part of the rescue center's adoption contract is that "Peanut" had to see my vet for an initial check within 7 days of adoption, and then proof of vet's visit sent back to the center.

So today was his visit. I guess because he's spent so much of his life in an "institution" he was completely at ease with the whole clinic visit. He turn's out to be one of those rag doll pup's that you can pretty much flop around how ever you want and he doesn't care. By the end of the appointment and initial consultation he was drapped across my vet's foot sound asleep.

All the ladies that work at his vet were taking turns holding him and trying guess what kind of dog he is.

We added a DNA check to his blood draw, so in about three weeks or so we might know what he's made of. :)
