Earlier today, Deb and I were getting ready to go into town to do some pre-birthday window shopping (Deb's B-Day is tomorrow...the 11th...can't tell her age as she would kill me). I was just about to close and lock the front door when I heard someone on our patio (which is elevated about 10 feet from the ground as our side of the duplex is built over the two one-car garages). I thought it was our landlord's son. I open the screen door and look out...and heading in my direction is a guy I had never seen before. He approached our open door and said that he needed to come in....at which point I took a hold of the door frame with my right hand...using my arm and my body to block him from coming in. He again said that he needed to come in, and I told him that he didn't need to come in. He said that he was a friend of the landlord's son and that he had a cab coming but needed $20 and that he would get it back to me later.
I could tell that the guy was a bit out of it...I assumed that he had been drinking. And with Deb standing right behind me, I was on full alert. If this guy had tried to force his way in, I would have messed him up real good.
After a couple minutes, he realized that he was not getting in and that he was not getting any money. He left and headed out across the meadow toward the landlord's house.
Deb and I got the house secured and got into the van to leave. As we were going up the driveway, we saw a Deputy Sheriff standing by the side of the driveway talking to the lady who lives in the upper apartment up by the road and a guy (turns out he was a cab driver). The Deputy asked me if I had seen anyone strange and I told him about what had just happened. He asked me if the guy had tried to force his way in and I told him no, but if he had tried I would have taken him down and hurt him badly while doing so....the Deputy smiled and, just under his breath, said "I would have done it anyhow."
Deb and I started in toward town but I turned around after about 1/2 mile...I just had to go check on the folks we rent from....their in their 80s, he is battling lung cancer (treatments are going very well and it looks like they will beat it) and she is just a frail little thing. As I get to the top of the hill before our driveway, I saw that there were two Sheriff cruisers down by the landlord's driveway and the Deputy up by the front apartments was asking the cab driver if he would drive down and identify the guy (which he did). Knowing that the guy had been apprehended eased my fears for the landlord and his wife.
Deb and I went to town, did the window shopping, and came home. A few minutes after we got home, a detective with the Sheriff's department pulled in and ask me about my encounter with the guy. Since the guy did not make any real effort to enter our house, he didn't do any finger printing or take photos. I told him that if the guy had tried to force his way in, he would have gotten hurt. The detective looked over the patio railing at the drive way 1o or 11 feet below and said "Yep, that's a long way down for someone who just got thrown over the railing."
Turns out the guy wasn't drunk, but was hopped up on "bath salts"....not real bath salts but some stuff that has been sold in stores with the name bath salts. Basically some chemist figured out a blend of chemicals to mix together that produced a bath salt looking crystal that could be smoked, injected or snorted and that really made people high....and since there were no laws against it, it was legal. Thankfully, law enforcement/government has gotten wind of it and steps have been taken to remove it from store shelves. The stuff reacts differently with different people...some folks get really really messed up on the stuff...like PCP basically. Nasty stuff.
Well, if nothing else good comes from this day, at least Deb got to see her man all pumped up ready to defend hearth and home with his mad Ninja Skills.
