My turn

Now the MB died again. The local computer place-not a box store but a place run by techs-said things change fast and that MB was on then off the market in about a year so it's now a new everything or option two. For a modest price I am told I can likely get back to where I was, and even hopefully plop the HD back in with stuff intact, like FS. My eyes lit up a bit on that chance but the wife says it will be a while before that can happen. You don't really need that computer for much anyway, she says. Ah well.

Take a look at E-Bay.....you can find new MOBOs on there for good prices at times. When I built my new system, I used the main guts from my old system, a nice empty E-Machine case and an E-Bay purchased MOBO and built a system for my sis-in-law. The MOBO set me back about $35. It was an old tech MOBO that would take the P4 processor, out dated RAM and stuff from my old system.

That's the joy of E-Bay; all the geeks & gamers who always need the latest, fastest gear will often sell their old kit at very reasonable prices - I've rebuilt several machines over the years that were just one step behind cutting edge, and for bargain basement money. :applause:

Searching for the exact one I have turned up zippo. They went the way of the disappearing dodo. Once they realized it was about gone, scientists of the day finished the job by grabbing whatever was left for their own collections.

You don't need the exact mobo, you could probably find a better one looking around. It just needs the same connections that all your current hardware uses, so same ram pin count, same processor socket, SATA ports.... Then you can start looking at whats better than your current set up, more front side bus, faster on-board chip set ect. I'll bet you can find a better motherboard than what you have now for less than trying to directly replace your current one.

Well for about $200 to $240 or so they will put together an Athlon 3.0 GHz dual core CPU (a little upgrade), 4GB Ram (XP only uses about 3), my vid card and recently bought HD in a new case with better ventilation. Fingers crossed, they said it should boot right in saving programs and everything, provided the HD survived the MB death. I thought it was a good price and should take me easily into another year or two when the inevitable change to Win 7 or 8 will happen. I should be able to pay for it in a couple of weeks if IOUs come in.
