Need Help. Struggling with unexplained CTDs

I experiened this problem last August and posted here but then the issued disappeared as suddenly as it had appeared. But it is back again with a vengeance.
After using CFS3 for years witout real difficulties, I get completely unexplained crashes to desktop when operating CFS3 and any of its offshoots - ETO, MAW, PTO, etc. They occur after operating the sim for a period of time, seemingingly without issues. Then, the time between crashes shortens incrementally until the point that it crashes at the user interface. After restarting, you get a reprieve, but it starts all over again once more.
For example, after operating CFS3 yesterday, without a hitch, today I had a crash almost immediately after hitting "fly". I've restarted again, so it's running now, but I know that won't last.
I have tried everything. Installing, reinstalling, clean booting, cleaning the CPU of dust, running the config file, deleting the uisels in each install multiple times, defragged, error checked, etc., etc.
Why this occured, then ceased, about a year ago is also a mystery. I've done nothing recently to the computer, such as add hardware. Again, it effects all installs of CFS3 sims when it happens and, after restarting, it takes a bit of time before the cycle starts over.

Below is my original post last year with the error information that I recevie when I choose "Details" upon restarting.

Help, please!
Although I've recently posted on this topic, I can't find an answer.

After years of running CFS3, ETO, MAW, etc., I've run into a serious problem with the sim. After starting and getting to the opening screen (or sometimes briefly into a flight), the game exits and I get the CFS3 needs to close message. I've done nothing to alter the game or add anything in a long time. It effects all CFS3 sims. I have no problems with any other applications.

When I click the "more details" option, the following info appears:

I've tried everything. Restarting the computer, running the config file, deleting the uisel. Nothing works.

Please, any help would be great.

Can someone please suggest an answer. I am at the point (again) of abandoning CFS3.

Have you tried a complete re-install of your computers operating system? I do it once a year to keep my system fast and trouble free. Not an easy thing to do; format, reinstall windows, reinstall all my games, but it's worth it in the end.

Maybe this is an Addon aircraft issue.

Some aircraft regardless of type or category, have been known to cause CTD's if the weapons pack isnt installed for that particular aircraft.

There was a case with me and a particular aircraft one time. I think it was a Bf-110G series or something, and because ii didnt have the 300L tank pylon or weapon the whole game crashed to desktop. The same issue regards a Ju87B from regs. Thanks to Nactpiloten, I found out that I had missing pylons and weapons files, or somehow they were placed in the wrong folder. Upon finding the issue it was fixed and now I'm bombing Trains and Merchants like nobody's business.

In any event, it seems as If CFS3 still remains a mystery. Sometimes things happen that no one can explain.

Vogel may be on the right track with this one. I also thought of what Auto mentioned,
(I've had this nightmare before from one of those nasty Anti-Virus posers...more than once
I might add). I just took my 'Puter' back to a "restore" point when all was well, but this will
affect anything that was installed after the restore point.

Before you do that W,check out any other games you play on and see if that is an issue.
Also before you do a restore, when is the last time you really took all the panels off that
machine and got all the dust out? (Un-plug before you do this and let sit for a few.) Also
mind "STATIC" issues when doing this. I just used a vac on the inside.

Nevermind,apparently you did that one!...sorry.

Another one of our fellow-flyers had this problem, and it sure made a difference!

If its JUST CFS3 that this happens, definatley check aircraft errors.

Good luck and hope you get it all straightned out. :salute:

Spawn Errors

Might check this one out. I would have problems with certain planes when they would spawn
(Game would crash at different times, sometimes immediatley, then sometimes I would almost
get through a whole mission). Turn any add-on spawns to "no" in the xdp file, delete bdp
then restart.

It's not an aircraft or a spawn issue. I didn't install anything recently, and when this happens, it effects every separate installation of CFS3 simultaneously.

I am at wit's end.

If you were having that issue on everything,I'd say a bad-bug. But if its just
CFS stuff, you got me there. The "dissapearing" for awhile part has me brain-storming
but cant think of anything off-hand.

And only CFS3. My FSX install and CFS2 install are fine.

Hey W, you may or may not have done this, but humor me. Pull EVERYTHING thats not
"stock", (aircraft, ships, any other folder items) put into a seperate folder and test the
game. After awhile if there doesnt seem to be problem at least you'll know where to
look from there.

If its in CFS3 we'll find that problem. :salute:

Oh my goodness, pulling all of that out is near impossible - CFS3, PTO, MAW, ETO. . .I wouldn't even know where to start.

I am afraid I am nearing the end with CFS3. Ouch.

Please dont write CFS3 off for Good. Maybe this just goes to show you that you might be able to run it as Stock instead of having all the fancy bells and whistles.

Its not the end of the world, you just want to have fun flying around in something and blowing stuff up. Maybe too this is a sign that we all need to appreciate the aircraft in the sim instead of just having numerous versions we dont even fly or get to understand in detail.

Me personally, Im careful about which aircraft I add to my sim. The excellent B-24 that came out took me at least two weeks to ponder over before installing it because I was unsure of how it would handle the game alongside my B-17.

The Aircraft PDF Manual taught me about how important the aircraft really was and still is.

Try out the stock CFS3 before you give it the axe. Then please stay with us in the forums if you need any more help.

Oh man! Yeah thats really extensive. Go the easy route first,go with the aircraft
folder first. (Keep only the ones the game needs to run,or stock) At least you would
be able to eliminate that folder as being any problem.

I have a "virgin" CFS3 installed in my computer. If you want, I can send you an original airplane folder so that you can try it that way. let me know with a PM with your email

And I hope it works for you

God bless

I have always maintained a vanilla CFS3 version. In fact, I uninstalled/reinstalled that version during this whole process. It too crashed. I really don't believe any add-on caused this issue. And I had not installed anything new at any point remotely before this issue arose.

The problem seems broader - although not so broad as to cause any issues with any other aspect of my computer. Only CFS3. I'm stumped by that and stumped by the fact that there will be short periods of time when the sims (vanilla CFS3, ETO, MAW, etc.) work. Then the problem reappears and effects all simultaneously.

Hi wsmwsm

here a few suggestions:

1. Did you try to shut off things like antivirus / firewall etc before starting CFS3. Maybe it's some kind of incompatibility?

2. did you install a new graphic or sound driver recently?

and a question:
what OS are you running?

good luck

I had thought of the anti-virus issue, especially in light of the fact that my Webroot software had recently been updated. I even went through the process of removing it, but to no effect.

I run Vista. Never had a problem for years.

As of today, I ran versions of CFS3 for perhaps 20-30 minutes (combined) without a CTD. But that's happened before, only to result in a fast crash the next time I started. I antipate it will happen again.

No new graphics card. I've never changed one.

Wwhen I have the CTD, I usually will go to my vanilla CSF3 and fly the P-47 razorback to get everything back to normal as I find that I had closed the program and had been flying an add-on that the other flavors didn't like. I sometimes have to do go thru the routine several times before it stops crashing - but it usually fixes the problem.

This is hopeless. I've done everything I can think of. Just don't understand why it works for short bursts, then crashes within seconds of reaching the user interface.

Hi wsmwsm

Not sure if you have dual core processors or not, but if you do, this may help.

this is from the Over Flanders Fields Forum, it was found that multicore processors could cuase issues. (mostly graphical stutters with timing issues between the various cores) but some have reported back that the game hanging or dropping back to desktop after short periods of flight had been resolved by appyling the single core affinity fix.

see link below.

Would also pay to mention your problem in the general discussion forum over trhere as well, this has been spoken about a few times in the past.

I cant remember the details and dont know VISTA at all (I am sailing on XP), BUT

I had a similar problem some time back. If I remember correctly my video card (250 MB) regularly overheated because the cooler was insufficient and eventually stopped working. The game crashed two minutes or one hour or (almost) any other time after starting. I replaced the cooler with a more powerful model and never again had that problem.

Your video card is overheating perhaps?
(then of course it would be difficult to understand why the other games work .......)

ALTERNATIVELY: could it be an inadequate RAM setting (the available RAM for a specific application can be limited)?
