I am building a New Game PC to fly CFS2 and other flight sims. on. Here are the stats up to this point. I have an Intel core 2Quad 2.5Gz CPU which I intend to replace but need your help deciding what to replace it with. Here is what I have done up to this point. I have 4 gb of ram one 7200rpm hard drive and an Nvidio GT640 With 2 gbs of ram. Can you give me some ideas on the Video card and the CPU? It is not to late to replace the video card if needed and put what I paid for it toward another card but I have not gotten the new CPU yet. Need input. THANKS

bobhegf,
First, what size power supply do you have?

Is your Quad core an intel i5 or i7? OR is it an AMD CPU?

What MB do you have? That determines what CPU you are limited to. Also, what OS are you using? Can you kick your system RAM up to 6Gb?

On the graphics card: There are two in the same price range that come out much better on performance charts all around: AMD's Radeon HD 7750 and the GeForce GTX 550 Ti. Newegg has the GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST for just a few bucks more with 2GB of Vid RAM.

My power supply is 375 watts but I am not sure what cpu I have weather it is an i5 or i7. I am using win7 and will check on the graphic card. I intend to bring my power supply up to 700 watts

700 watts should run your rig.

Once you know which CPU slot your MB is set up for, you can find the max CPU you can drop in on it. In my opinion, for the money, i5 quad core CPUs give you more performance options. That said, if price is not a restricting issue, i7 CPUs will get you into the 3.9 to 4+GB CPUs. If your MB is slotted for AMD, you have a few more options, as AMD CPUs are receptive to overdriving without harming them. Just have a very good heat dissipation system in place. Here is where I would spend the extra money. Get a really good CPU cooling system with fan and heat sinks. I even run 2 extra cooling fans in the tower box blowing air on the vid and sound cards. Heat is the enemy of gaming power computers.

I run with my side panel off of my tower and no back panel in the desk compartment where the tower is located. The four fans (power supply, CPU, and 2 extras) keep the air exchange going pretty well.

I wish you well on your endeavor.

Bobhegf,

Anything beyond 30-35 frames per second is like throwing 93 octane in a Yugo. You may trick yourself into believing it makes a difference in the way the mission runs, but it really doesn't. It's just overkill.
