This reminds me of the story in 'Biggles Pioneer Air Fighter', called 'Battle of the Flowers'. The Huns raid 266's aerodrome. Algy swears revenge and quickly returns the favour, vigorously bombing and strafing the airfield of the offending Germans. When he gets back, he's asked about his apparent lack of hits on hangars or aircraft, and reveals he was actually attacking the Huns' flowerbeds. Which he explains by showing the other pilots the crater left by the German raid, where his own flowerbed used to be.
