New PC......Blurried graphics with FS2004

Hello,

Have just taken delivery of a new sim PC (Chillblast Fusion Hurricane - I3570K, 8gig RAM, 1Gig GTX560Ti card, Win7 64bit etc etc) as my old computer sadly died.

FSX runs well with the Orbx scenery but am very very disappointed by FS2004. On my old system it was superb with the VFR scenery looking very sharp indeed (see Yak screenshot) but on the new PC, everything more than a mile away from any position looks as if it has been washed out with a paintbrush. I compared my old cfg file with the new and made the necessary amendments, but to no avail its just terrible. As I would like FS2004 to remain my primary simulator as have so so much for it, I just hope that things improve in the future. There must be a way around the problem? :)

Has anyone else been in the same situation and is there a way around it?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and suggestions,

Best wishes,

Martin

For what it's worth...

*Don't give up on a cfg edit. New hardware/software has to be tweaked and this is the easiest to do first. Search here on SOH for help there.
*Try running the Nvidia desktop manager or control center to try different settings. A simple change from performance to quality might fix things like it did on mine with the same "circle of sharpness" issue.
*I think most would agree that the "latest" graphics drivers are not always the best. The ones that came on the CD with my card are still the only ones that do the job for me. Each time I get the urge to tinker and try the "latest" set I always go back to the original so you might try reinstalling what came with your new stuff. Good luck and enjoy your new toy:jump:

Thanks for replying - much appreciated. I haven't changed the graphic drivers so they are the ones that came with the machine. I too have had problems with the 'latest and sometimes not the greatest' so will leave that as it is for the moment. Have had a little read through SOH and picked up a few tips, so will have to try them. Can't be like this all the time as everyone would be in the same position. Just a matter of trying things out as you suggest with the .cfg file.

There was me thinking that it would be a simple install and the odd little tiny tweak and away I go. How wrong this has proved! :(

Best wishes,

Martin

Away now with work until Monday, so look forward to reading your thoughts upon my return!!

Oh come now, what fun is a computer without performance issues? It might still be one tweak, just the right one is all. And it probably couldn't hurt to reinstall the drivers anyway. Might have been a glitch that allowed them to run but just not at 100%. It also occurred to me that you could search for any graphic card patches specific to FS9. Don't forget the FS9 service pack as well, though I don't know if that had anything to do with what this problem is.

I was having a similar problem- these lines fixed it:
TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=8TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=4
TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=4

Different for every system - the default and most of the usual tricks didn't help. But for some reason putting the default radius larger than the extended radius worked.

Mr. Matheson,

I can't thank you enough for this piece of information. I work night shifts and was reading through this thread at 2am on my lunch break(!) and couldn't wait to get home to try if it worked. Edited the cfg file, lined up on one of my usual runways and ummm, think I can see the hills in the distance, not just as hills but clear too. Took off and wow, everything is virtually back to how it used to be. Like meeting an old friend again!!! Thank you so much indeed. Very, very pleased!!!

Best wishes,

Martin

Question...? Not to sound like the dummy that I am but just to confirm. That entry is in the FS2004 config.... correct?

Thanks for the info, Matt. And by the way, mate... Since you so eloquently pinched me Flag right out from under me nose, I have a whole squadron of Sea Furys headed your way... in an effort to bring it back. LOL! :salute:
