New Project

Since I now have the IRIS F-16D, I decided to go back and build (for the third time) NAS Ft Worth (Carswell AFB). I've done this same base three different times, never saved any of the files and lost all of them to HDD crashes and Viruses. Now that I'm slightly familiar with photoreal scenery, I thought I'd put myself through the agony of doing it one more time, lol.

The placement of the photo worked out perfectly, I just think it needs to be a bit darker. Otherwise, I'm going to start placing objects. No custom stuff, sorry, but I did get permission from MAIW to use objects from their scenery for Luke AFB, so if you have that one, this will contain many of those same objects. Nice thing about Air Force Bases is that the architecture is usually pretty similar. The Luke scenery also has something that has become standard but no one has ever built as a scenery object til now and that is the Aircraft shelters that you see at almost every fighter base now. A very prominent part of the flightline and they work, especially in areas like Texas and Arizona, or Kuwait and Iraq.

Anyway, that's my new project.

Just a little tour of the base. . .the buildings you see on the right side of the rwy. . .that's Lockheed/Martin. The blue hangars visible near the Lake side (Lake Worth) are for the C-130 ANG Unit. The remaining flightline area to the left of those hangars is the home of the 301st FW/457th FS "Spads" and then south of that area, from the tower on is Navy and Marines. There was a Navy Reserve F-18 Squadron there, but it was deactivated in 2005/2006 due to requirements for additional jets for Active Duty Units. Now they have very little as far as aircraft go save a few C-130's

The airport looks like it lines up nicely. Sometimes they don't. I remember one in Lubbock, TX (I think) where the runway was almost 90* off in FS9. Is that from USGS?

No, this is just from SBuilderX done internally. I have noticed something you probably already knew but as dark as I thought this image was, once it was combined with the mask, it showed to be lighter. I think the white mask filters into the image somewhat to cause that (my guess anyway), so I'm going to darken it again and try a second compile to see if it helps.

The white of the blend mask or water mast should not modify the color of the original image.

Yep, no difference, lol. Of course I didn't save the lighter version, so I'm going to redo the image. Tomorrow. . .time for bed now.

[SIZE=-1] FSX Scenery Objects--Aircraft Shelters. Are your cockpit seats burning your bare legs in the summertime? Does your plane captain grumble whenever he or she has to do anything to your interior? We've got some aircraft maintenance shelters for you! Whether you're deployed or at home, far-flung or near, these shelters will give you some shade and make it so you won't have to scrape the frost off your windshield. Six different shelters to choose from, and all the shelters scale up very well. These are for freeware designers to use in their sceneries. By Jim Dhaenens.

Yea, I saw those Jim, but unfortunately, the one that is being used now by the AF isn't in that group, lol. You can get some idea of it here:

ok, I redid the image, darkened it up a bit and I think it'll work now. These are some close in shots of the "important areas" of the base, lol. In order they show:
A closer view of the ANG C-130 ramp and beyond that the 301st FW ramp
The Lockheed-Martin Facility on the west side of the rwy
The 301st FW ramp. The main hangar (the large white block, lol) and to the right of that are three buildings that form a loose triangle. The top left corner building is Life Support, the top right corner (my personal favorite) is the Egress Shop and the bottom of the triangle is a relatively new building referred to as the "Red Ball Supply" building. Anyone who has ever worked military aircraft knows what a "Red Ball" is.

Anyway, now I can start putting buildings in place and some vegetation and remove the default building as well.

This shelter might be close to what you're looking for. It's in the ez_ac_shelters1.zip file on Avsim. I did it for FS9, but it will work in FSX. I could update it. I did this one a couple of years ago.

That is actually pretty close, the only thing missing are the side panels. I can sink the base into the ground to cover that. . .cool. The object library with the MAIW Luke AFB Scenery has some as well, but I'm going to go ahead and download that one just in case.

Hmm, just tried that file name in Avsim and flightsim.com and nothing came up. I'll try a little later, gotta go out for a bit. BBL

Thanks got it. Ya know, that is one thing that is kinda irrittating about both Avsim and flightsim.com. . .their search engines suck, lol.

I can do a search for an item and mistakenly capitalize it and it won't return with a hit, or I can use the developers last name. . .nothing. . . .type in part of an aircraft type, nope. . .you better be exact in the way you type in a search or it won't give you anything in return.

This case is even more weird because after I just downloaded this, I went into the "advanced search" and typed in the zip name, the area it was found in and the designers name (or at least one of them, Steve Ziegler) and it still would not return a hit. . .yet it's right there.

Project Terminated.

Once I started working with the buildings and hangars, I realized that this would turn out to look like a "grab bag" of parts. There aren't enough hangars of the correct style, size, orientation and proportion to even get started. Since I don't do GMAX or any other 3d program this is a dead project. Think I'll go back to small, single rwy airports and be satisfied with that.
