New System ? Beware -Mic may not work

If you are contemplating a new system using the new Tri channel, or even one using more than 2 gigs of memory, your microphone won't work if you are on XP. So it seems, unless someone has a solution.

More than 2 gigs of memory- sound recorder problem.

This may be of information to those wishing to use voice recognition software ( in my case, Game Commander ) because of a problem i have encountered
with trying to get Sound recorder in Windows to work in my new system ,i.e XP systems using more than 2 gigs of Memory.

I have bought a new computer , I7 processor with the new tri channel memory 3 gigs etc etc .
I wanted XP 32 bit O.S. because of Vista problems , drivers conflicts etc

It turns out that Sound recorder does not work if the system has more than 2 gigs of memory- So my microphone is of no use.
See support.microsoft.com/kb/284893.

I presume, no doubt, that it works with Vista, but anyone wanting to stick with good old XP - tough!

Nice one Microsoft, so thoughtful.

Parky ? OVS ? - any thoughts?

Wow,

That one comes as a it of a surprise......well, a big surprise actually. There may be light at the end of the tunnel though and I'll tell you why I think so. Microsoft claims "This problem occurs because of a design limitation in Sound Recorder and not because of any problem with the underlying multimedia." If that's so, then they damnedwell need to get off their collective butt and fix it with some kind of software update. It shouldn't be all that difficult....regardless of their now limited support for the XP OS. My guess is it could be something to do with the memory controller being built into the i7 processor as opposed to being assigned to the motherboard chipset.

I'm also a bit confused Dave. Does this problem mean you're unable to utilize the mic at all, or does it mean you just aren't able to record using the MS Sound Recorder. I see you've mentioned Game Commander issues. Are you not able to get that software to work at all?? If not, it would seem that it likely relies on MS Sound Recorder for some aspect of it's functionality.....which sux indeed. Once again, perhaps :costum:soft can address it via some kind of patch?

As is typical of the Boyz of Redmond, they've basically left people hanging by not asserting wether or not they have any plans at all to do something about it.

Typical.........:a1451:

Hello James
It looks like i can't use the mic at all. before I use sound recorder, I go into the sound devices to make sure recording is "radio buttoned" and then I go to test the sound card by talking to see if there is a recording and then the next page, whether, when i'm talking, if I can hear it. This is in the "voice " part of Sound and audio properties.
That all works fine until I come out of Sound and audio properties, at which point the microphone select box reverts to clear, i.e unselected.
When I use Sound recorder it works if i have the Select checked. Then when i go to exit, or save, up comes this "Not enough memory to complete the operation...." stuff
So it seems that the mic won't stay working, soon as i come out of Sound and Audio properties
And to my mind the reason seems to be as in the knowledge base at MS.

It also seems that game Commander isn't about any more, because i was looking to see if they had a fix. The parent company was Mindmaker.com

I'd be interested in what OVS finds, 'cos he he same setup as me, I think.
Unless he has Vista.! I'll ask him to comment.
In the meantime if anyone has a work round or knows if game Commander are still going, I'd be obliged.

Hi Dave, Dave here, as you may recall I am using Vist32 with 4gb ram, no problems with sound recorder....I hope you get your BHAH very soon now mate. This waiting must be a serious P.I.T.A.

Dave,

I got your PM about the MIC, mine works fine. Maybe your Mobo has an issue? Did you check-out your BIOS? Are there any settings...?

Also... what brand MIC do you have. Friday I purchased a new 35USD Logitech Headset... Fiday Night I went to Target and bought a 12.95USD GE headset. The Logitech sucked and I had all kinds of problems.

The cheapo worked great. I used it last night during MP without any complaints from Duck or Crankpin.

All the best, and thanks for the heads-up. Try another setup first.

Just a thought, and I'm sure you would have probably already looked into it, but if you're using a dedicated soundcard, make sure you've disabled the onboard sound through the BIOS. I've seen some pretty peculiar behaviour on systems when both devices are fighting for supremacy.

From support.microsoft.com/kb/284893:
When you try to record a .wav file by using Sound Recorder on a computer that has more than 2 gigabytes (GB) of RAM, you receive the following error message: Not enough memory available to complete this operation. Quit one or more applications to increase available memory, and then try again.

Note This problem only occurs when the amount of available physical memory is more than 2 GB.
Doesn't mention any problems playing a wav file...

Damned good thing too....because if that was part of the problem, you'd have no sound at all...other than your mp3's and ogg's...lol.

I get sound played. It is the recording it isn't doing.

James- I did have two sound systems, the card and onboard as well. I have been into the bios and disabled the onboard- but still the same.!! I too thought that might be the answer.

OVS - I note you are OK, but you haven't clarified whether you are on XP 32 or Vista. Could you please?
The mic itself does work. It works on two other 'puters
I think I said i get some recording "waves", in Sound recorder, when the "select" button is checked - and also in Voice menu of "Sound and audio Properties" In fact I can hear what I am recording, as I am meant to in the test.
But when I come out of the Sound and audio properties menu, for some reason it doesn't work. I go back in and find that the select box for microphone has become unchecked. Check it , and the mic works!
I can't seem to "save" that checking of the select box.

Any suggestions anyone,?

OK, gotcha. I am on XP32... and the same thing happens. However, the mic does work. Maybe for specific programs it forces it to open? But I see what you mean. I play with the MIC properties, and then I see it's 'muted' again, over and over.

Dave,

Uninstall, then reinstall your soundcard drivers. Better still......try a different version of the drivers if available. Worth a shot. If that doesn't work, open up the tower and pull 1 stick of RAM out. Reboot and see if the problem still exists. That'll at least determine if in fact you're seeing this Tri-channel issue, at which point if you are, it's time to fire off a nasty e-mail to Mickeysoft. From the symptoms you guys are describing that show up in Audio Sound And Properties, they should be able to fix the damned thing.

Cheers Mate,

James

OVS S! Thanks for that confirmation. It is interesting you say your mic works. Obviously now, within the system, like me, it doesn't work. Do you get the "select" box keep unchecking as I describe?
What prog are you using when it does work?
Seems i can't get to Game Commander to see if they had a fix.
Thanks

Would using another reocrder work? there are several free ones that are better than Microsoft recorder but I am not sure if game commander would work through them.

If you use skype or other voice comms sometimes it turns on/off the mic.

Also there's something screwy with mic enabling in XP, sometimes you have to select it in two places in control panel, fuzzy now but it's a convoluted journey:

Control Panel, sound and audio devices, Advanced, Options, properties, tick Recording, tick Microphone, OK, Under Microphone tick "select". Also go in there and tick Microphone boost. try that.

yes, it was a lot of that. I had to check this, check that, open it again to see if it worked... etc.

We were using Teamspeak the other night.

I don't use Skype - only game commander and I get the same result with that turned off

Done all that a dozen times-lol Ref "Under Microphone tick "select" - This unselects when i close sound and audio devices. Whilst select is checked the mic works, but it won't stay that way.
OVS has the same result - it seems that the more than 2 gigs of memory is the cause- It also seems that some things like Teamspeak override the Windows settings - Huh - if only it would "set" :)

Parky - brand new computer- before i go delving inside i'm consulting the builder etc - see if he might try it on one of his machines. :)
