New Vermont Airport

That would be John H. Boylan State Airport in Island Pond (5B1). I love the location and the surrounding greenery in your pic, BTW. "Home of the only state-owned turf runway". Slated for upgrades, along with two other airports in the region. https://vtdigger.org/2021/04/25/state-airport-plan-calls-for-upgrades-at-three-locations-in-the-northeast-kingdom/ https://vtrans.vermont.gov/aviation/airports/johnhboylan
I guess nothing has been finalized as those meetings ended in 2021 with no decision on going forward with the planned upgrades. Typical of local governments dragging their feet for one reason or another.

Just about there. I decided to add some of the proposed features as outlined in a meeting in 2021: "A basic Terminal Building, Fuel Services and on-site Weather Reporting Technology." 5B1_WIP_005 by Ed Wells, on Flickr

Not much there. Haven't been by in a few years but it's pretty barren. Does have the white cone markers at the corners of the runway. Some developer a few years back, wanted the state to give the property to them to use as a log yard for the wood pellet operation they wanted to set up in the old Ethan Allen Furniture factory just up the road.

State told them no as it is a necessary resource if there is a natural disaster in that area. Instead, another developer bought the factory, tapped a couple of million maple trees and is now one of the largest Maple Syrup producers in the US.

John H. Boylan State Airport in Island Pond, home to the only state-owned turf runway, is the lowest rated airport in the state system. It is unattended, and few aircrafts are based there.

“John H. Boylan State (and several other small airports) all have a need for a basic shelter/terminal building, and at least seasonal, part-time management on-site would be of value for John H. Boylan State,” the plan said. The plan also recommends installing fuel services at John H. Boylan, along with on-site weather reporting technology. The airport brings in about $36,300 in direct economic impact, according to the plan.

The public comment period for the draft plan ended April 8, and the aviation council met April 13. Because of a lack of a quorum, the council did not make any decisions on the proposal, according to Amy Tatko, spokesperson for the Agency of Transportation.

After the council makes a recommendation, Transportation Secretary Joe Flynn will decide whether to approve the proposal, Tatko said.

So, almost 2 years after this meeting in April of 2021 I haven't seen any additional information that anything has been decided.

Hi Ed,

I just downloaded this great scenery.
All looks very nice, and another fine destination for VFR flights. Thank-you.

Just one question, are you, or anyone else getting very bright blue water areas near the airport ?
My other water areas further out in the region are more darker, greyish blue (like those by Bradley Field NH49).
Maybe it's something else causing this ?
I have Orbx Global, Vector and OpenLC running.

Thank-you,
MZ
