Newchurch ALG under construction

ian elliot

SOH-CM-2025
Its not often i actually get to visit the airfields im working on but im developing an interest in the Advanced Landing Grounds in Kent, and the first under construction is Newchurch near Romney Marsh which is a 40 min drive from where i live. Home to RAF Spitfire's and Typhoons supporting the D-day landings and hunting for V1 bombs. There is nothing physical left of the airfield, runways were made of PSP metal planking and tented accommodation for pilots and groundcrew, lucky officers were billeted in local farmhouse's, with the local church doubling as the MT section. The locals have organised a very fine memorial thats being dedicated this weekend and the village sign is very interesting also.
Ive just had a very nice afternoon visiting Newchurch and the fields where the ALG once stood, walking the footpaths through farmers fields trying to imagine what things would be like 70 years ago,
