Nieuport 17 repaints

jinx

charter member past
I am thinking of doing a repaint of the Nieuport 17.
I attach the image--if you know if that scheme has been done, let me know.
If it has not been done, I can do it.
If you have other schemes, post them here and I will what I can do.

That looks like a good one to do.

here are a couple that I've done for Belgium.

N17Belg-6.jpgN17-Belg2.jpgN17Belg-2.jpg

N23-Belg6.jpgN23-Belg3.jpg

First one is a Nieuport 17 the second is a Nieuport 23.

I've been saving them for my Belgian campaign. They go with my two Sopwith Camels.

John

Got the email, thanks. I need to install a PSP editor.
Your repaints look great.
The cheeckered parts are nicely done too.

If you make a campaign, please do not have us download a 100 files for it.

Hey Nick,

You may want to increase the scale of the knight by maybe 5%. If you look at where it come up to and where the wires come out you'll see what I mean. I had to do the same with the comet on mine. Other then that its looking spot on.

I think I have a few fonts for the numbers. I'll have to look for them. I try to save them with my templates when I find the ones I like. If you come across any good fonts pass them my way. I'm always looking for some.

Did they use a silver dope or is that just how the artist painted it?

there is a picture of the pilot and plane here:

http://riseofflight.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=193&t=24285

Here is another reference to the plane. Its about halfway down.

http://wwiaviation.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

The picture for that one looks like yours. so if you go by this you are spot on. Thats why I always try to find as many pictures as I can for each plane I do. We get so many Artist renditions that its hard to tell which is correct.

so never mind what I said about the scale. Its looking great.

here is another.

http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?137433-Rafale-News/page248

It seems there is a conflict with which is the correct tail number. I'll keep looking.

Hey Nick look at this on Escadrille 15.

I think it is silver dope.

http://translate.google.com/transla...+N3+Spa3&hl=en&biw=1024&bih=602&prmd=imvnsfdb

No its Aluminum. See the bottom of the page.

You might like the untranslated version better. Its meaning will still be intact.

http://albindenis.free.fr/Site_escadrille/escadrille015.htm

Sorry I like the history.

Blood Hawk,

I know the ALBIN DENIS site, and have all the pcitures you mentioned here.
It is aluminium.
I did not paint the fuselage--just erased some areas on the side by copy\paste opf rectangles from other areas that had no mornings on them--that kept the slight grain.

The two profiles we have show 2 different aircraft with small differences and different serials on the fins. I chose one for the time being--pictured above.

I installed a version of Paintshop Pro X but it will not open the files you sent me of the Belgian repaint-- I do not know why. If you can converrt them to PSD files for Photoshop, please do so and send them by email.

I may upload this tonight if I finish it.

Do you think I can upload it here too? Or only at the AEROCATE site?

Thanks for the help,

Nick

You can upload here. Mine and Oldwheat's are here. All of my WWI repaint are Aerocrates aircraft.

I'll save the template as a PSD and send it to you. You might get it late or even tomorrow. Its 9 am here and I haven't been to bed yet. I'll see if it converts then decide if I want to stay up longer. Either way you'll have it in your email.

That is a great find. Some rich history with that squadron. Definitely one worth doing.

The first one is done.
I am almost finished with the one attached here, a plane that has Pan playing his flute on the side.
Greek mythological connection here! Pan was half-goat, half-man and used to chase all the nymphs in the hills after attracting them with a sweet flute song,
Also known as the original "satyr" who got most of the girls. My uncle Dimitros Biskinis was a famous painter who made great paintings of Pan that I will include with the upload.

I also attach one of his paintings, titled SATYR AND NYMPH, pencil and pastels, 1936.

Jinx,

Thank you for your efforts on this Nieuport repaint, it will suit the skies of World War I exceptionally well! :applause:

Excellent Work Nick.

I like the new engine texture. It makes the AC look alot better.

Want to try an upgraded Nieuport 17. I'll send you my Belgian Nieuport 23. Your Textures will work with it. I'll also send the rocket fix.

Now we just need someone to do a French Campaign. I also have a modified SPAD 7 set to Guynemer's SPAD 12. cannon and all. Its Kind of fun to use.

Till Later,
John

John and Rami,

Thanks.

I am doing a new repaint, an a/c piloted by Dorne, with the famous CIGOGNE insignia on the side, still carried today by French a/c. The bird is mucher further foreward then usual but that is what the profile I based it on shows...
It is amazing how most, if not all, present-day insignias of the French Air Force were first conceived and painted around 1914-18, in WWII. I thought the British were traditionalists, but the French are more confirmed traditionalists than the French.
The Belgians also seem to have emblems that go back to WWI.
I did get the files you emailed me and had a look, and will install them soon.
I also think by tonight this repaint will be uploaded.

Nick

SPA 3 Nieuport 17 Cigogne.zip

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Skins - Other

Description: :wavey:A repaint of the CFS2 Nieuport 17 by Gary Aumaugher.
Instructions as to where to find the original aicraft in the Readme.

The repaint represents a Nieuport 17 (n° 939 on fin, numbered 12 at rear fuselage) piloted by Slt René Gaston Dorme and belonging to Escadrille SPA 3. It sports the famous Cigogne (Stork) insignia, still carried today in the French Air Force.
Its pilot Dorme had 23 confirmed victories and 29 non-confirmed, as it is stated at the Albin Denis site.

Credits go to:

Gary Aumaugher for the model, airfile, etc.
Albin Denis for his site, a treasure of information.

Ahh Father Dorme or Père Dorme.

Another excellent Choice Nick.

I don't think he called his Nieuport 17 Père Dorme. at least I can't find any mention. I know his Nieuport 11 was Père Dorme. Nieuport 16 was Père Dorme II (This could have been a N17). His SPAD VII was Père Dorme III.

If I remember correctly it was Deullin that first called him Père Dorme. which is funny in a way because I believe Duellin was older. It was more toward his character then age. I could have my facts confused but I believe that is how the story goes.

Its said that Guynemer took the loss of Dorme quite hard. In fact you could compare Guynemer's last months to Richthofen's. Many claimed that it was the loss of Dorme, among other things, that really started it.

I little note on Escadrille 3. It was called Escadrille N 3 till October of 1917 when it was Officially changed to SPA 3. The "N" stands for Nieuport and the SPA stands for SPAD. Even though They started getting the SPAD VII's in March or April of 1917. I forget which month.

The Low Winged Stork of N 3 - SPA 3 is called "Cigogne de Guynemer" or Stork of Guynemer.

Escadrille's 3, 26, 73, and 103 all used Storks in different flying forms.

Sorry for the History Lesson. As I mentioned before, I love this sort of thing.

Till Later,
John

John,

I have just been collecting data on Tarascon and may make a skin of his a/c.

I have also collected and saved tons of stuff on Dorme. What you say is of great interest, though.

Albin has many photos of Tarascon. He had an amputated leg--that is why he always seen with a walking stick. See images--he is the seated in the easy chair in the group photo, with a cock on the table which no doubt was cooked 'coq au vin' later--with wine in the sauce...

I could never imagine WWI would be so fascinating...

Cheers

Nick

John,

Do we have a model for the attached profile--what is it? A Nieu 17 but subtype? It has a spinner...

Sorry Nick,

I don't think we do. I haven't seen one. Even in the CFS1 models.

I believe that that version was more or less an experiment. I know I've read about it. It wasn't in operation long. Most of the Spinner hubs were removed by ground units. I'd have to look it up to tell you more. So if you were to make the Texture it would still be correct.

Thanks John,

I am finishing the first Zigomar now, and will deal with the no. 4 later. See images. I have two versions, one shot up with patches and one clean. The images show the one with the stitched darker patches.
