Nifty 50s Jet Pilot Lounge

After my first leg YPDN to WIHH im glad to say i now have some beer :)

This is my first race in flight sim and the first time i have used the realism settings so high.. last time i tried i crashed the 747 on landing back in fs9 :(

My little hawker hunter on take off almost rolled over and i stalled it twice on on the big climb to FL400. My take off was that bad i had no idea if i was on course until i passed my first main way point but i was a few miles out so not to bad for me as ive only just started to navigate with out GPS :)

Thought of the flight - Buy ruder pedals.. they help with a cross wind on take off :wiggle:

ps. my wife wont let me get the ruder pedals to go with my flight yoke :(

Okay,,,,shoulda told you gandy the first guy here buys the beer!! :ernae:

Great flight BTW.

So far I'm amazed at the weather. Usually no friend in the beginning of most events, I've had the luxury of clear skies and tailwinds.

Payback time for the trip through this part of the world during the MacRobertson Race. Nearly three times as fast and three times as high.

I love the way the events here force me into things I don't normaly do in FS. ....like flying jet fighters. This one is actually a ball to fly. I wouldn't have ever known.

Cheers,

I did buy the beer but i drank them all myself :p

Fun trip that one as i did not set up a vor, ndb or any other type of tracking close to the destination airport so it was 100% visual on the last 600nm. Flew over 3 storms as well.

Thought of the flight - Double check my planned flight plans to make sure i have set up vor's and ndb's

popped in for a beer
and see that gandy has polished them off.

the first leg was a kick in the pants!
kinda odd though, I was cruisin' along at 30K,
99% throttle, Mach .93, no problem.
all of a sudden, I glanced in the lower right corner
and saw the OVERSPEED warning.
WHAT?!? quick...hit the speed brake!
whew. only 8.4 seconds
throttled back a wee bit and away we go.
never had that happen before.
wonder why it happened?
it's a good thing I hadn't got up to pee or something.

now, I'm trying to plan the next leg
with a minor hang over.
since the beer was gone,
I had a "few" shots
to calm my excited nerves.
turned out to be a few too many.

oh well, this is suppose to be fun!
now, back to work.

Sorry we missed reiterating the well-known rule about the beer tab... sadly, it means it's an open tab til the last flight lands.. but we have flexible payment terms :wiggle:

Tell your wife we insist on rudder pedals.. it cuts down on carpal tunnel syndrome and reduces the number of joysticks thrown at walls.

I was on top of the airport in Jarkata before I knew it and going almost 500kts. Did a quick slam on the spoilers and commenced circling trying to slow down enough to land. Then I bounced the heck out of it a few times on landing and ended up out in the grass somewheres on the airport property. Just glad I didn't hit a windsock before I got it stopped and the baton dropped.

That T-33 is pretty darn tough.

Don't worry, I'm sure the weather will turn for the worse somewhere along the route. It seems that every race I get at least 1 heart pounding landing where the fog rolls in, fuel is low and I can't find the runway. They make for the best bar stories though.

Vicious

The flight to Jakarta was routine. Heck, I would almost call it boring. The only thing that made it moderately interesting was that when I started my descent I was doing so at a blazing 350 knots indicated instead of the 280-300 knots I usually make when I'm flying tubeliners. I decreased my rate of descent, but it didn't seem to help. I tapped on my joystick wondering why my autothrottles weren't working correctly.

I then happened to tap the throttle, and the engines started to wind down. It was at that point that I realized I had somehow deactivated the autothrottles somewhere along the way.

So, I was a tad fast as the airport approached my view, but my experience in propliners reminded me that the landing gear works brilliantly as a speedbrake. It was an equally effective tactic for the C-135A.

As much runway as it takes for the Stratolifter to get off the ground, it stops its landing roll in a remarkably short distance.

I had some strong wind last night, flying at FL400, 100knot tail wind and 8knot head wind which made for a very bumpy ride. I had to watch my gauges like a hawk as i was being blown off course for most of the flight. The best bit was the 100 knot tail wind.. had that for over 600nm.

Tail wind for the win :)

Zig Zags lol

Nasty 8 knot head wind

I tried that dropping the wheels trick with the T-33 and they wouldn't go down until I had dropped to a more reasonable speed.

as some may already know,
I like shots of the sunrise.
here are a couple from yesterday's flight,
Changi, Singapore to Danang, Vietnam

do you have a drink?
sure, I could use one, thanks.
are you comfy?
this might take a while;

somehow, I had the feeling that today's flight from Danang to Hong Kong,
had the potential for disaster.
since I decided to use Duenna sync time,
it put me into another night flight.
no big deal, I like driving at night.
besides, the runways are lit up, right?
WRONG!!! VHHX isn't!!! now what?
well, press on with the plan.

after all the pre-flight and such,
I started rolling and got off the ground just fine.
what I failed to notice was that when I raised my flaps,
I lost altitude and went into the drink.

yes, please, I will have another.

so it's, go through the pre-flight again,
take-off and be more careful this time.
I set my heading for 042 and started to climb.
I found a pretty nice tail wind at 24,000,
so I throttled back a bit and started to cruise.
I made sure my Nav1 was set to 115.5, just East out of VHHX
and my ADF was set to 377 so I'd have my approach set up.
it's all good, right?
WRONG!!

the Sound file for my B-47 has an odd little quirk,
heck, I don't know, maybe it's just me.
when she's cruising along,
sometimes I can hear what sounds like a men's chorus.
oh yeah, did I tell you I was nuts?
anyway, the sound is very melodic and actually kinda nice.
it's also a bit hypnotic. hmmm

so I'm cruising along, having a nice time,
when I start to think,
this flight seems to be getting a bit long.
I look out the window and see I am over land.
hmm, that's odd.
I fire up TerraView and what the heck,
I have blown by VHHX and am over Main Land China!
I check coordinates and compare with another computer that's running FS9.
turn east, then south and try to get back to where I should be.

so why didn't Nav1 or ADF IDENT alert me?
apparently, there are two VOR beacons and I chose the wrong one.
my choice is very short range,
even though it lines up perfect with the runway.
same with the ADF. DANG!!!

so I come around, get lined up...almost.
did I mention no runway lights and low clouds?
I had to abort and go around.
I am learning patience, sort of.

this time, I have her lined up real sweet,
except that visibility is ZERO!
I'm in a frickin' cloud! CRAP!!!
I figure I've passed, so I reach for the throttle to abort, again.
WAIT!!! is that the runway?
well, I'll be jiggered.
I'm a scosh off, but close enough.
down safe and sound and in one piece. :applause:

oh yes, please.
I will have just one more shot.
and a beer. thanks
say, you wouldn't happen to have any snacks,
would you?
please

I didn't get around to dialing down the AI traffic in FS9, so when I saw an MD83 approaching the other end of the run way as I was taking off I thought I'll be out of the way before he's even close. I missed him okay, but I was a little distracted trimming for the climb and didn't see my airspeed pass the barber's pole. I was in overspeed 7 seconds before cutting the throttle had any effect. Not a good sign with high realism settings. The President would not be happy if the wings fell off before we got to Hong Kong.

Speaking of which, not an easy approach in poor visibility. There's a VOR way back from the runway but it doesn't really line up on 31, and all you've really got is the NDB.

Anyhow, here's a pic of my rig on final at VHHX 31:

There for a long time in the drafts of the rules, we had style points listed with Kai Tak Rwy 13 being an example.
