Ahoy there,

I'd like to try my luck on carrier ops in FSX. Been reading about it a bit and i've got the Nimitz. It is being advised to install 'Aicarriers2' by Lamont Clark but in other posts 'Carrier Tracks: Volume1 and 2' by David Scott Wilson-Okamura is advised. I suppose i do not need them both, do i ?.... Which one should i install ?.... ( i like the jpg's that come with the latter program and show the various paths of the carrier )

And is there any AI traffic going on aboard the Nimitz ?

And finally, how does the payware SDB Enterprise compare to the freeware Nimitz ? Is it recommendable to have both perhaps ?

Jan, AIcarriers is sufficient, you can even add other carriers to that proggie.

I surely recommend the DSB Enterprise, but also the RFN Clemenceau/Foch besides Javier Nimitz series.

Carrier OPS in FSX are great fun.

I would suggest you try vLSO, too (Virtual Landing Signal Officer) from Serge "FsxNavyPilot" is a great utility, too - although it can be a little depressing at first (well, to me it was...lots of Wave-offs and "C" graded landings!)...

I'd like to suggest also Voodoo's Hangar effects mod which add better wake and stams effects...

Until I'm guaranfriggenteed that JAVA is safe, AI Carriers will remain in limbo! Works like a champ, but, JAVA exploits have torqued me off for the last time.

Carrier Tracks: Volume1 and 2 are cool, but, they need to be put in a seperate folder and enabled to run the carrier tracks and disabled when you want your FSX traffic files to work.

The SDB Enterprise is great.
Then again any carrier in FSX is great when you love Naval Aviation!

Don't forget Flying Stations have Ark Royal and two versions of Victorious, and include the necessary to add them painlessly to AI Carriers.

@ fxsttcb: thanks for the links ! Was going to ask what JAVA got to do with it but now i know.... When i click aicarriers.exe JAVA cannot do this, cannot do that..... i.e. not working at all. ( and we're off.... :costum: )

Any remedy that you know of ?.... ( i think i have the latest JAVA update )

You can add AI, but for obvious reasons they will only be able to land on a static carrier with a separate AFCAD and flatten file, both have been done before. The AI model will have to have a special airfile for the short takeoff/landing, again both have been done in various forms. Military AI Works has a great French Navy package for FS9, but should work fine in FSX. While I do like having AI on the boat, a moving boat in a MP environment adds to the immersion.
 
Ah,ok, thanks Vic. So it's either AI trap and launch or full speed ahead.Not both. I remember AI carrier traffic in FS9. Great fun standing on the bridge and watch it all happening for a while. I believe it must've been a payware Alphasim carrier.

Anyway, atleast i've got the carriers going. Very nice indeed ! :applause:


That JAVA thingy not working doesn't seem to matter. Because i didn't know that i installed 'carriertracks1and2' as well. So now i can have two of these puppies sailing next to eachother if i like.. :cool:

I will of course remove one of the aicarrier files before installing all the other goodies. I am particular interested in the LSO package.

Getting all a bit clearer now, thank you all again very much for your hints and tips to get me going ! Highly appreciated ! :ernae:

If you fel like trying piston pounders from a bygone era, or straight wing jets, the M.Davies Essex boats are great. Also Willi Fudd and friends are fun aboard.

M. Davies had envisioned a very complete rendition of the various Essex ships, but got bogged down and moved on to other things. He was kind enough to release what he had in a useable, if somewhat basic condition.

I typically utilize field conditions for operation and flight test with ship moving ahead and often some basic wind, 10-15 knots. For angled deck ships the wind is set somewhat to port to compensate for the ship constantly slipping off to the right of the approach course in a no wind situation. A friend FA18 driver says the alignment is much easier when the wind is blowing and the ship properly aligned

Exactly the same happend during production of our (Maam-Sim) FS9 TBM model back in 2008 when Michael donated a basic version of his USS Langley CVL-27 which was then nicely finished by Rob Cappers.

Do you know if Michael released the source files of his Essex model as well ? I suppose it will not be possible to properly texture the model without them. Wouldn't it be quite a waste of this excellent carrier model if left only half finished ?

I figure it will have to look something like this ? :

Back at the start of FSX there was a freebee CV6, which was one of the first driveable, moving laudable carriers. I used it to do the original flight dynamics for the Milviz Corsair, which was eventually released by A2A with their own Airwrench flight dynamics. Not quite as good as the M.Davies Essex ships. He did the original external for what is the slowly developing P61 SOH project and did turn over the source files for that one. One might ask?
