Just to be clear, to report the facts, the search is far from over. Dave Cundall and his team (a team which includes probably the most respected individual in the world on Spitfires (recovery/research/history), Peter Arnold) are still at it, and there are another couple of locations which are still in need of digs besides. This recent news is actually the same which was posted weeks ago, when "Wargaming" (one of the sponsors) pulled their archeologists out of it, who were claiming that there were no Spitfires to be found. I believe the team is now purposely keeping the media out of their work so that the relations with the Burmese and the focus of the work is not tampered with any further - I think they've more than learned their lesson in that regard. Better to keep their work out of the spotlight until something is found, rather than trying to meet the expectations of the media around every turn.
