North Pole

What is the reason that we are unable to fly over the north pole and south pole? Is the CFS2 geography actually a flat world? How far north and south can we actually go?

Merlin2, first off welcome aboard.
As for flying over the north or south pole's, I've never actually tried it but here are some bases from Alphasim for Antarctica.

Well, I'll be darned - he's right. Just tried it. You can't start freeflight above 89 degrees lat. If you start there and try to fly North it appears that you are going sideways. I have put away my copy of fs2002 but I wonder if it is the same. Maybe it gets close to a "divide by zero" situation. Then again maybe Bill Gates has something up there he doesn't want us to see. But cfs2 is not a flat world. You can fly great circle routes plotted on a regular paper map and get to where you want to go on time.

Welcome back William! How is life at McMasters? A very interesting observation re flights over the North Pole. Does this mean that Rhumbaflappy's new LOD9 mesh files for the extreme northern and southern latitudes can't actually be seen in cfs2?

Thanks for the welcome! I have been shadowing for a while; and very caught up in my research; but I have a sabbatical coming up soon; hope to get back into the pilot's seat.

Looking forward to more insights into this quirk of CFS2--or is it true of all MS simulators?

Wowsers, who would have thunk it?

I have flown across Greenland and Iceland between Canada and England a few times. Never really tried to go over the top. White sky and white ground gets a little boring, well, actually, very boring. Thank whomever it was that created autopilot for our CFS2 crates!:ernae:
