nVidia GT1030 Question

Computer Gurus,

I have 2 PCs, one for flight simming: Dell XPS with Windows 7X64 with 6GB RAM, NVidia GT610 X 2GB. 7200RPM HD 650 Watt PS.

I also have a Windows 10X64 with 8GB RAM, NVidia GT1030 X 2GB. 7200RPM HD. 300 Watt PS (factory OEM).

I don't like to do my sim building projects in WIN 10, so I stay on the WIN 7 machine most of the time.

I bought another NVidia GT 1030 for the Windows 7 machine to increase FPS. (Price and experience on the WIN 10 machine).
The only thing is, it gets 8 to 10 FPS in CFS2, FS9, FSX under Windows 7X64.
My GT610 gets 25-50 FPS under Windows 7X64.
I should be getting a big increase in efficiency according to everything I researched online with a LOT higher FPS.
Instead, it just barely runs the flight sims.
I have downloaded several previous drivers to roll back to earlier to see if that was the issue because the sound in the sims now gives me an echo for voices and breaks up on engine sounds.
Nothing seems to change.
Initially I thought it might be a defective graphics card: Gigabyte GT1030, so I sent it back and bought a PNY GT1030. NO DIFFERENCE.....

Anyone got any ideas what the problem(s) might be and how to fix them?

I'm not a guru and I have no experience of that card.

However the GT1030 is available with 2 types of memory, DDR4 and GDDR5 and it makes a BIG difference in how it will perform.

Could you tell us what CPU's those two machines have?

Oh, and having a 300W PS is one helluvah bottleneck. Having that little electric power will make all your hardware throttle back.

Paperwork says it is a GDDR5. The card itself doesn't specify.
I suspect after watching the video you provided it is a DDR4.
In no uncertain terms, IT SUCKS.

I expected better from Newegg.

The gaming XPS 410 has an Intel 6600 Core 2 duo 2.4GB CPU under Win 7X64. Video nVidia GT610 X2GB RAM, 6GB system RAM.
The Windows 10 machine has i3 4170, 3.7GB CPU under Win 10X64. Video nVidia GT1030 X2GB RAM. (Must be GDDR5), 8GB system RAM.

IMHO your windows 10 machine has two major bottlenecks: The i3 CPU (reasonably fast, but can't take any load) and the PS. Changing a power supply isn't that expensive or difficult. You could do it yourself and that would throttle the speed of the hardware.

The GFX card isn't that powerful either. It's not only the RAM on it, it is the graphics processor and the bandwidth of it.

Sorry to be the bringer of bad tidings.

Intel 6600 should be enough for CFS2 and FS9 but FSX is very CPU sensitive. With an older GT610 it runs so and so but perhaps 6600 is too little for a never GPU GT1030.

I will look into a 7 series graphics card.
BTW, both FS9 and FSX run fine on the Win10 machine.
I just can't build anything in CFS2 MB or modify any airports for FS9 under Windows 10.
So, I keep my Windows 7 machine running.

Hi Devildog,

My remarks about the power supply still apply. Especially if you're going to invest in a 7 series GFX card.

My Windows 7X64 XPS410 has an 850 Watt PS I put in last year.
It is NOT a stock Dell XPS410.
I've enhanced it a bit.

Also, I was mistaken on the Windows 10 machine. It has a 400 Watt PS, which is still smaller than is needed for maxed out graphics on a decent graphics card.

I've been debating building my own machine.
I just need to buy a case, MB, CPU.
I actually have an nVidia GTX1050Ti on the shelf.
Physically it is too big to fit into my Dell XPS410 case and too powerful for the 400 Watt PS.
I also have a decent sound card and network cards for LAN and Wireless.
So, just a matter of determining to do it.
 
What's the motherboard in the Win10 machine ?

Might be able to swap the i3 out for an i7
Could probably pick up a 4790K cheap enough

That an the PSU, pop in the 1050Ti and you should be in much better shape.
 
I hate getting rid of a running machine with Windows 7X64.
So I'm also wondering instead of building a new PC, (which may or may not have Windows 7 compatible BIOS/drivers) if an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 at 2.66 which is the same socket and compatible with the Mother Board would be compatible with and run the GT1030?

I am no CPU or GPU expert and get all my knowledge from Internet. Both of the CPUs Intel 6600 Core 2 duo and Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 are old compared to nVidia GT1030. So the idea changing CPUs isn't very promising. If I ware in this situation and wouldn't wan to throw away the old PC I'd buy a new MoBo with good enough CPU (for GT1030) or try to return the GT1030 GPU and go on with the old rig. One alternative is also a new PC.

I don't quite see why you cannot use your simulator in Win10 PC? If you do, you need a more powerful PS as Priller told above. By the way Win10 runs FSX (and other sims) as well as Win7 and there is Win7 compatibility mode in Win10 if needed.

What ever you do browse Internet or/and ask PC experts (you possibly know and trust) before decision.
