O/T 1/300 scale models

Pat Pattle

SOH-CM-2024
As an xmas present to myself I've just bought a load of 1/300 scale a/c models :)

These things are usually for wargame use and are not highly detailed, a fighter has roughly a 1" wingspan. But they only cost pence and is an inexpensive way of collecting model aircraft in minium space.

I've no connection with this firm other that as a customer.

If you do a google image search for 1/300 scale aircraft there's a few piccies like these:

Thought you might like to see the finished articles. My painting skills aren't up to much and putting the decals on was fiddely as heck but for about £15 and a few hours of enjoyment I now have the start of a minimum space aircraft collection. :) (Old pennies not included. )

5 bonus points to identify them all.

The one at the back is 1/200 scale btw, that was a bit more expensive but I had to have it!

Picture I: Whitley, Wellington, Hampden, Blenheim, Battle, Spitfire, Hurricane, Defiant, Fulmar.

Picture II: Spitfire, Defiant, Hurricane, Blenheim, Wellington, Battle, Whitley, Hampden, and another Defiant.

Currently trying to understand how on earth a 1:300 Fulmar seems to have transformed into a 1:200 Defiant. :isadizzy:

Well spotted, have an extra 5 points! :d
I didn't have the correct paint colour in my tin to do the Fulmar, so it's still in the hangar.

What! Only British 'planes.

Are there any other kind??? :kilroy:

You mean the Miles Master is no longer the RAF advanced trainer????? :icon_lol:

Acually, the Tucano is a lovely aircraft, they fly over us regularily and sound awesome! Was lucky enough to see about half a dozen 'dogfighting' over North Devon whlist on holiday a few years ago. Not bad for a foreigner I suppose! :)

I must say Pat that your painting skills are way better than those of the pics in your first post. Your colours ar spot on.

Been scale modelling for many years until the computers took over. I once took part in the English IPMS nationals as well with a scratch built DH88 Comet racer in 1:32 which has won a throphy at the local nationals. Very tough competition though over there.

Great work you're doing there! Keep it up.

Hi Pat,
Very nice job of painting, considering the size! :applause:

A small airforce in a 6" square, not bad eh?!

Cheers Shessi

Do you have any photos please Dimus? Would love to see some well made models (aircraft that is ;)), I need some inspiration - I have a 1/48 Defiant still in it's box (Classic Airframes) but it was fairly expensive and can't pluck up the courage to start it!

They look fun, I must admit. My collection of 1/48th and 1/32nd stuff is getting a bit big...

A good trick is to spray the painted aircraft with clear gloss varnish before you put the decals on. Then once you've done the decals and they've dried properly, spray tit with matt/semi-matt varnish. The decals will appear painted on, and won't dry out in years to come.

I'm going to get some varnish to finish them off, not heard of applying it beforehand too, will try that with the Deffy. Thanks Nigel :)

They're all now stuffed in the storeroom. I keep saying to myself I have to take digital pictures of them but just don't get around to doing that. You might have given me an incentive though.

Follow ndicky's trick with the varnish. It's a winner.

You know, I wouldn't mind trying those! At the moment, I've pretty well run out of space...

The 109 is in 32nd scale, the others 48th. They take up too much room! Not to mention, time. Yours look more and more tempting each time I look...

They make some very good ones in I think 350th scale out of plastic, for warship models, too. But no Bomber Command aircraft!

Wow, stunning Nigel! How do you get the panel lines to show like that? is it a thin wash or similar? I've got some old modelling guides somewhere, will have to dig 'em out.
