Observers vs. Balloons

My 1st hop in OFF I practice what I preach and jumped into it full real as a FE2 pilot with 57 squadron, without a clue how to do anything (never having played CFS3 before, let alone P1 or P2). IOW, the typical Bloody April FNG.

Naturally I soon got separated from my flight and had no idea where to go. But I was right over the lines and German balloons were everywhere. So I lined up on one of them, figuring my observer would blast it. I made 2 passes close enough to the gasbag to spit tobacco juice all over it, which I did both times to indicate the target to my observer. But all he did was observe, he didn't fire a single shot.

What gives? FE stands for Fighter, Experimental. I might not have a gun of my own to shoot, but these things were doing fighter offensive patrols in Bloody April and still giving a fair account of themselves.

So is there a command to make the observer shoot, or is he only going to shoot at airplanes? Seems strange he'd totally ignore a balloon within spitting distance.

Hit F8 in the string bag, the observer has 2 Lewis guns at his disposal. Hit F8 again for the other gun. F6 gives you the pilot again

Those Balloons might make you feel good, but you'll get no credit

Must be the Balloon Mission, or that's the way it was in Phase 2

NOW ????:ernae:

If you get lost again you can hit the M key (map) to reorient yourself on where you need to go, worked for me.

I only can speak about Phase 2, for as you say: 'Lots to explore in P3'.

The balloon mission is assigned to you, when flying a mission in CAMPAIGN MODE. There's about 20 Different missions, each time it's different, and Never the same area. A few are patrol over friendly area's, a few are patrols over enemy territory. Nothing is scripted, you can't KNOW what's coming, when, or from where.

Forget the saying "Practice makes Perfect" it no longer exists !! :ernae:

Didn't RFC 2-seater crews both get credit for kills, regardless of who pulled the trigger?
Likewise.

If that was the case, the pilots would only want an experienced observer, which wasn't always the case

TIP: Select credits and just sit back and listen :ernae:

:help: Trying duplicate Bulletheads first hop, I don't have a 57 squadron in my list, any clue on how to get it.

Thanks
