OFF P3 – Comments and Questions

P3 arrived a week ago.

After replacing my failing CRT monitor with a Samsung LRT, rebuilding my system within its MB and dual-core CPU limits by largely the replacement of the video card with a GTX 260 and additional Ram, and many weeks of traveling back and forth to help look after aging parents (one in hospital and the other still at home, 90 and 92 years old), I’ve finally had the time to assemble the new toys.

Doing this the hard way, I first got the new TrackIR working without too much difficulty although my first attempts with TrackIR had the world whirling around me out of control. I wonder why TrackIR doesn’t have an easy ‘1-2-3-step’ beginners set up instructions such as OBD software provides for OFF P3. However, some study and it begins to be somewhat intuitive for those who have played around with other pc peripheral toys. I tested with the base CFS 3 application to ensure TrackIR was ‘tracking’ and then on to OFF P3.

Installation of P3 is a breeze. Instructions are well laid out. With the TrackClip Pro on my Panasonic headset I fired up OFF and sat back…let the games begin!

I love a good production and this one is a great production. It had me hooked from the opening scene. No one listens to the opening score each time, but the music as well as the opening scenes is dramatic and stirring. I found that it sets a stage of anticipation, perhaps even excitement.

I’ve only flown some QC in various modes as I have yet to learn almost everything about this game and the controls, however this is a very immersive and amazingly well developed sim. With TrackIR providing the views and my controls set at the high or moderate settings, the flight sensations are amazing and frame rates decent. I can run with everything maxed but I found that the frame rates started to suffer a bit too much when the on-screen activity is very high. This still requires some set-up experimentation, though. And, I still have to get TrackIR to pan smoothly as it is a bit jerky but that’s the problem with installing many new things at once.

All in all, great work OFF P3 team…many accolades heaped on you and your long suffering families. When I flew the highly modified CFS 2, I developed some new ocean water scenarios for that group, and knowing the time I spent on just that one small facet, I can only wonder about the hundreds of hours that you have poured into this endeavor. Very well done! This sim is going to be, for me, the best yet, and your efforts have completely revived my years past interest in the planes of the Great Air War. And from what I’ve seen so far, flying these early aircraft is certainly a different kind of challenge when compared to blasting around at 300 or 400 mph in a WW2 bird.

I’ve been having the time of my life nursing the Camel around to try and get some shots at the Albitri. So far, I’m losing badly! I’ll have some questions about flight model characteristics another time.

Today though, I wanted to ask for some suggestions. Although I’ve hunted through the forum, I wonder about a couple of things that I can’t yet find answers for:

1. TrackIR. Has anyone changed the acceleration curves for head motion to “aggressive” from custom? Will this make less player head motion result in more on-screen head motion? I’m looking for the easiest way to make the head motion more sensitive and I thought I would ask before I play around too much adjusting it or modifying the custom curves.
2. What controls are used in OFF that are not normally used in other flight sims with newer aircraft? The ‘blip’ switch is one I can think of. I can ask this in clear conscience with the excuse that I haven’t yet figured out which unique flight controls are required for WW1 planes.
3. What are some of the handiest controls (any) to apply to Joystick functions for OFF besides the regular gun trigger, bombs, rockets, and throttle, etc.

Like gg, I’m a real fan of the Saitek evo FFB joystick and I use it with CH Pro Pedals.

I finally quit flying CFS 2 a couple of years ago and haven’t flown much since, but OFF has become my new flight sim passion. The history and the romance, I suppose, of those early aircraft…there’s nothing else like it and OFF P3 delivers it professionally and in fine style!

Thanks again OFF team for a terrific sim!

I have the zoom-in and zoom-out on my thumb-buttons. Binoculars in the cockpit are very handy.

Yep, I fiddled with the TrackIR curves quite a bit to get them the way I liked them. I ended up using 'smooth' for all except y-axis (up/down) on 'dead-zone' and z axis (side to side) on 'aggressive'.

Aggresive will make the movements much more rapid, as you have suspected. Or you can go right in and edit the profiles directly.

No need to fear, it is pretty easy, so experiment to you hearts content.

Do you use the latest patch of Track IR? I feel it is very smooth, and, as far as I know, is set by some OFF members.
guess I read it in the "readme".:ernae:

Thanks for the comments!

Zoom-in-and-out on the joystick is a good trick, Siggi.

77Scout...I will do. I was just wondering about the settings that you veterans may have already found that work well before I experiment with them (call me 'lazy' ...:costumes:). I'll check them out.

Giant2111...yes, I am using the latest patch. TrackIR works quite well now, but I need to fine tune it a bit for sensitvity and smoothness.

I hope to get more feedback on joystick functions. I am going to map F12 for TrackIR on my joystick as I can see that it will be very useful.

TIR profiles will vary a lot here's the curve I use on all axis.

Thanks Pol,

I'd like to try that curve. Would you mind posting the values for each postion 0 - 7 for one side of the curve since I can't get them from your posted image? Then I can adjust them if I need to.

I'll try yours and the generic offerings just to see how they compare and to give me some sense of how much the values change the tracked motion.

TrackIR sure is the way to go for immersive flying! I can't believe how quickly it becomes natural motion once you move your eyes by moving your head (point at objects with your nose...I felt like a bird dog at first... :kilroy:).

Excellent!

Don't have much time to go through settings for everyone at the moment.. 1.31 a.m. arg...

Ok quickly....

50 40 30 20 10 5 2 0
52 48 42 33 22 14 6 1

Your preferences may like more/less anyway just try it?

Then use the copy to all curves.

Thanks a bunch, Pol...

Yes, 1:30 am your time. There was no rush!

Appreciate the figures though...

A little something you might find interesting if you conduct any future searches. You're only searching to Sept 2008, that's when we experienced a Massive Crash and lost all our data ( PooF ) :kilroy:

You see the top top "writing" where it says "shift entire curve" ?

If you use the little buttons you can shift the curve higher or lower. The higher you shift the curve the faster the view will move. Play with it to get the best setting for yourself.

Hi gg...roger that re the search. I'm still hoping to get more suggestions for mapping OFF useful functions on the joystick like "F12" for TrackIR which I decided I want to have handy.

Hey Fortiesboy...thanks for that tip. I saw the control for curve height but haven't played with it yet. I'm just getting started on this now.

Thanks to all for the TrackIR tips! I'm not scared to experiment, but it's sometimes easier to get started when it's narrowed down a bit to the parameters that others have found to work for them.
