P3 arrived a week ago.
After replacing my failing CRT monitor with a Samsung LRT, rebuilding my system within its MB and dual-core CPU limits by largely the replacement of the video card with a GTX 260 and additional Ram, and many weeks of traveling back and forth to help look after aging parents (one in hospital and the other still at home, 90 and 92 years old), I’ve finally had the time to assemble the new toys.
Doing this the hard way, I first got the new TrackIR working without too much difficulty although my first attempts with TrackIR had the world whirling around me out of control. I wonder why TrackIR doesn’t have an easy ‘1-2-3-step’ beginners set up instructions such as OBD software provides for OFF P3. However, some study and it begins to be somewhat intuitive for those who have played around with other pc peripheral toys. I tested with the base CFS 3 application to ensure TrackIR was ‘tracking’ and then on to OFF P3.
Installation of P3 is a breeze. Instructions are well laid out. With the TrackClip Pro on my Panasonic headset I fired up OFF and sat back…let the games begin!
I love a good production and this one is a great production. It had me hooked from the opening scene. No one listens to the opening score each time, but the music as well as the opening scenes is dramatic and stirring. I found that it sets a stage of anticipation, perhaps even excitement.
I’ve only flown some QC in various modes as I have yet to learn almost everything about this game and the controls, however this is a very immersive and amazingly well developed sim. With TrackIR providing the views and my controls set at the high or moderate settings, the flight sensations are amazing and frame rates decent. I can run with everything maxed but I found that the frame rates started to suffer a bit too much when the on-screen activity is very high. This still requires some set-up experimentation, though. And, I still have to get TrackIR to pan smoothly as it is a bit jerky but that’s the problem with installing many new things at once.
All in all, great work OFF P3 team…many accolades heaped on you and your long suffering families. When I flew the highly modified CFS 2, I developed some new ocean water scenarios for that group, and knowing the time I spent on just that one small facet, I can only wonder about the hundreds of hours that you have poured into this endeavor. Very well done! This sim is going to be, for me, the best yet, and your efforts have completely revived my years past interest in the planes of the Great Air War. And from what I’ve seen so far, flying these early aircraft is certainly a different kind of challenge when compared to blasting around at 300 or 400 mph in a WW2 bird.
I’ve been having the time of my life nursing the Camel around to try and get some shots at the Albitri. So far, I’m losing badly! I’ll have some questions about flight model characteristics another time.
Today though, I wanted to ask for some suggestions. Although I’ve hunted through the forum, I wonder about a couple of things that I can’t yet find answers for:
1. TrackIR. Has anyone changed the acceleration curves for head motion to “aggressive” from custom? Will this make less player head motion result in more on-screen head motion? I’m looking for the easiest way to make the head motion more sensitive and I thought I would ask before I play around too much adjusting it or modifying the custom curves.
2. What controls are used in OFF that are not normally used in other flight sims with newer aircraft? The ‘blip’ switch is one I can think of. I can ask this in clear conscience with the excuse that I haven’t yet figured out which unique flight controls are required for WW1 planes.
3. What are some of the handiest controls (any) to apply to Joystick functions for OFF besides the regular gun trigger, bombs, rockets, and throttle, etc.
Like gg, I’m a real fan of the Saitek evo FFB joystick and I use it with CH Pro Pedals.
I finally quit flying CFS 2 a couple of years ago and haven’t flown much since, but OFF has become my new flight sim passion. The history and the romance, I suppose, of those early aircraft…there’s nothing else like it and OFF P3 delivers it professionally and in fine style!
Thanks again OFF team for a terrific sim!
